The portraits in this volume mirror the Spanish Civil War itself, with the left pitted against the right. On the left are Margarita Nelken, revolutionary feminist and politician, and Nan Green, a communist nurse who left her children in England and joined her husband in the International Brigades. On the right are Mercedes Sanz-Bachiller, who entered politics and became a powerful woman in the Francoist zone, and Priscilla Scott-Ellis, a wealthy English socialite who travelled to Spain to stay to help the fascist war effort as a nurse on the front lines
