NOTICE.

The compiler of this work is aware that there are many school publications extant, the details of which are of a more elaborate character, differing materially from his. He therefore takes leave to state that it was not held desirable that the pages of the "Young GentlemAN'S BOOK" should, in any degree, be calculated to produce tedium; and, consequently, apathy and unconcern, in the mind of his Young Readers.

Every department of knowledge will be found to have its due proportion of the space allotted to the whole. Having said thus much, it will not, it is conjectured, be imputed to him that he had professed what he has not endeavoured to show—brevity blended with information and instruction.

The rapid sale of the FIRST EDITION has stimulated the Editor to fresh exertion; he has carefully revised the former, and, in many instances, substituted fresh poetical effusions, and considerably enlarged the latter, or second edition.
