THE HE classical market has been flooded with works on Latin Composition; but scarcely any have hitherto endeavoured to meet one of the principal difficulties which beset the juvenile composer-I mean, the adaptation of the English to the Latin idiom. In the present volume, I have attempted to satisfy this, and some other requirements, in deference to suggestions made to me by the Masters of the principal Public Schools. This book is not intended to occupy the same ground as the well-known work of Mr. Kerchever Arnold, on Latin Prose Composition, used at Eton, Harrow, and many other schools; or Mr. Bradley's edition of Mr. Ellis' Exercises, which has been favoured with the patronage of Rugby. It is designed for those who are familiar with those elementary works; and is divided into THREE PARTS, which are severally adapted to the wants and capacities of boys in the shell,' the fifth form or remove,' and the sixth form, in our public schools. I. The FIRST PART consists of a series of passages translated almost literally from authors of the golden age of Latinity.
