by wood; with hints for its proper distribution over the whole face of the country will not be thought unworthy of the consideration of proprietors, who by a due attention to ornament, might very much enhance the worth of their estates. Such strictures though perhaps freely delivered, it is hoped will not give offence, being offered with the pure design of benefiting the owners, and of rendering to the vallies and their skreening borders accumulated charms. The remarks on Derwent Water have been extended to a greater length than those on any of the noticed districts; and with more reason because in the management of its woods, the encircling elevations seem to have been generally disregarded. Proposals for the reduction of the present and the generatiou of other foliage, and the harmonious association of both, with circumjacent objects, have been respectfully submitted to the consideration of the governors of Greenwich Hospital, who, while encreasing the value of the lands, are considered as capable of presenting from them a succession of visual recreations, which in their kind, would, probably, be unequalled in Britain.

Resident friends have liberally furnished the modern state of towns—but their appearances as allied to the arts, are deduced from the researcbes of the writer himself, who, to the above gentlemen, and to others, here returns his sincere thanks for their repeated acts of kindness. From the Keswick guides, Messrs. Hutton and Greave, (the latter now succeeded by his sons) and from Mr. Jon.

athan Otley, he likewise boasts of many favours. Mr. Otley like Mr. Hutton, has studied, with much industry, the natural history of the distriet. Watch repairing, is a part of Mr. Otley's employment, and his general turn for mechanics, has qualified bim to construct various portable mathe rat cal instruments. To a pocket compass, he has adapted a graduated circle, which being placed when wanted, on the top of his walking stick, he observes the relative direction of surrounding hills, and by a barometer, he calculates their heights. He constructed the map accompanying this work, and his travels, and observations, bave enabled him to correct some of the errors of former maps. The altitude of mountains are chiefly taken from the trigonometrical survey, published by order of the board of ordnance, but from which, though little, he has in a few instances presumed to vary ; to these are added the heights of other hills not before published.

Mr. Otley has favoured the writer with an account of the floating island, on Derwent Water, and with his hy. pothesis, first published in 1818. He has accompanied the writer in several of his excursions made from Keswiek when collecting materials for this work.

It would be highly presumptuous besides those of the press, to offer this book as free from error, but as every possible care has been taken to prevent errors, it is expected they will not be discovered to be numerous.

It is here necessary to apologize for the explanation to sixty aquatints, published in 1815. A description of these prints was always meditated, and its incorporation with a short guide, was deemed a proper vehicle for information, and though unforeseen circumstances have protracted the time ot publication to uncalculated lengths, the description so begun could not with propriety be abandoned.

If by the perusal of this book travellers shall find themselves introduced to unexpected pleasures, the end proposed by its author will be accomplished.

WILLIAM GREEN.
