DISCOURSE 1.

1 John iv. 8.

GOD IS LOVE.

Friends of my life! It is my sincere wish, that at the close of my services among you-an event which cannot be very distant, and which may be very near-I may be able to say, “ I have not shunned to declare unto you the whole counsel of God.” When I inform you that I shall not experience this satisfaction, if I shall have neglected to lay before you, more in the detail than I have hitherto done, my matured sentiments on a subject which, next to the

doctrine

B

doctrine of the immortal Life of the Righteous, I conceive to be the most importánt doctrine of revelation, namely, the future Punishment of the Wicked, I am confident that the apology will be sufficient for the freedom and plainness of this address and of what will follow, even though I should advance opinions, which some of you may not yet be prepared to receive. In a series of discourses, delivered at different times on the Divine Perfections and Government, I have endeavoured to lay the foundation.. I shall now, by the blessing of God, which I humbly but fervently implore, attempt to raise the superstructure. I solicit only a patient bearing, and an ir partial examination of the grounds of my opinions, while I give you, without reserve, what appears to me, a correct account of the whole plan of the Gospel Dispensation ; from which I trust it will be manifest, that it is indeed s the glorious Gospel of the blessed

God."
