And the Lord heard her voice. And as he was led to execution, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a youth whofe name was Daniel and he cried out aloud: I am clear of this woman's blood. And all the people turning towards him, faid: What is that which thou haft faid? Who ftanding in the midft of them, faid: Are you fo foolifh, you children of Ifrael, that, without judging aright, or discovering the truth, you have condemned a daughter of Ifrael? Return back to judgment, for they have borne false witnefs against her. Then the people went back in hafte. And Daniel faid to them: Separate them one from another, and I will examine them. And when they were feparated from one another, he called one of them, and faid to him: O thou that art grown old in wickednefs, thy fins are now come out, which thou haft heretofore committed in giving unjust judgments, oppreffing the innocent, and difcharging the guilty; though the Lord hath faid thou shalt not put to death the innocent, nor the righteous man. Now therefore, if thou faweft her, tell me under what tree thou didst fee them talking together? Who answered, under a maftick-tree. Then Daniel faid: Thou haft juftly lied against thy own life. Behold the angel of the Lord, according to the sentence paffed by him, fhall cut thee in two. Then, he being put afide, he commanded the other to come, and faid to him: Thou offspring of Canaan, and not of Juda, beauty hath deceived thee, and luft hath perverted thy heart: thus have you done before now with the daughters of Ifrael, and they, through fear, have converfed with you: but this daughter of Juda d Or, come upon thee.

And they arofe against the two Elders; for Daniel had proved them guilty, from their own words, of having borne falfe witness. And they did to them, even as they had malicioufly intended against their neighbour, and put them to death; and innocent blood was faved on that day.

INSTRUCTION.

HE Church feems to forget, in the Mafs of this

Tday, the fentiments of pennance and of forrow,

with which he hath been taken up from the beginning of Lent. The reafon of this is, that formerly fuch as were to receive baptifm at Eafter, were enregistered after having been examined this week. Befides, fhe faw the time now approaching for the reconciliation of the Penitents, whom she had fubjected to publick pennance on Afb-Wednesday. The future birth therefore of thofe, who were judged worthy of the grace of baptifm; and the refurrection to a new life of feveral of her children, who, after having gone aftray, return to God by a fincere converfion, is the fubject of the Church's joy on this day. MASS. INTROIT. Ifaias lxvi. Pf. cxxi.

a free-woman. But he that was of the bond-woman, was born according to the flesh : but he by the free-woman in virtue of a promife: now thefe things were faid by way of allegory. For these are the two covenants. One made on mount Sinai, which bringeth forth to bondage; and this is Agar. For Sinai is a mountain of Arabia, and hath a reference to Jerufalem, that now is, and is in bondage with her children. But that Jerufalem, which is above, is free, and is our mother. For it is written: Rejoice thou, who art barren, and that beareft not: break forth, and cry out, thou that bringeft not forth: for he that had no bufband, hath more children than he that hath a husband. But we, brethren, are the children of the promife, as Ifaac was. But, as then, he who was born according to the flefh, perfecuted him that was born according to the fpirit; fo it is also now. But what faith the fcripture? Caft out the bond-woman and her fon: for the fon of the bond-woman shall not be heir with the fon of the free-woman. Therefore, brethren, we are not the children of the bondwoman, but of the free-woman; and it was Chrift that purchased us that freedom.
