merly known by the name of Galwey Lane, now part of Dame Street. Sir John, from his constant attachment to the crown in those troubled times, and the services in the province of Connaught, and in the counties of Clare, Limerick, Cork, and Kerry, became so obnoxious to the disaffected, that they accused him of many crimes before EDWARD III. who cited him to appear before him, when he manifested his innocence so clearly, that the king granted him many confiscated lands, confirmed him in his title and privileges conferred by the Duke of Clarence, gave him for a motto, " Vincit veritas," and for arms, (in addition to his paternal coat,) viz. "Or, a cross gu. five mullets of the field." He resided at Dundangans, two miles from Cork, and ever after greatly contributed to advance the royal authority. He died in 1400, leaving four sons, viz. 1. WILLIAM, ancestor of SIR GEOFFREY GALWEY, created a SIR JAMES GALWEY, bart. died EXTINCT. 11. Henry, killed in the Irish wars, unm. III. Honora, daughter of Jacob Barry, esq. of Kilkenny in that county, and had two sons, JOHN, his heir, and Stephen. The elder, JOHN (MORE) GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, m. Catherine, daughter of William Meade, esq. mayor of Cork in 1600, and had issue, EDWARD, his heir. Geoffrey, who m. Anastasia, daughter William, living in 1656, who m. John, of Malaga, in Spain. The son and successor, EDWARD GALWEY, esq. of Lota, in the county of Cork, m. first, Helen, daughter of Henry Goold, esq. of Cork, by whom he had a son, JOHN, his heir; and secondly, Catherine, daughter of William White, esq. of Ballymahon, by whom he had two sons, Walter and Patrick, and two daughters, Elinor wife of Thomas Coppinger, esq. of Ballyvolane, (see vol. ii. p. 327,) and Anas IV. GEOFFREY, of whose descendants tasia, of William Therry, esq. Edward Gal we have to treat. The fourth son, GEOFFREY DE GALWEY, who served the office of mayor of Cork in 1430, m. Elizabeth, daughter of De Courey, Lord Kingsale, and was s. by his son, EDWARD GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, in the county of Cork, who m. Mary, daughter of Richard Lavallan, esq. mayor of Cork in 1455, and had a son and successor, GEOFFREY GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, whom. Mary, dau. of Maurice Roche, mayor of Cork in 1488, and was father of WILLIAM GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, who filled the civic chair of Cork in 1502. He m. Margaret, daughter of Richard Skiddy, esq. of that city, and was s. by his son, EDWARD GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, whom. Anastasia, dau. of Stephen Coppinger, esq. of Cork, and had a son and successor, RICHARD GALWEY, esq. of Dungannon, who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Jacob Ronayne, esq. mayor of Cork in 1575, and was s. by his son, Nine of the Lavallin family were mayors of Cork. The first John Lavallin in 1293. Thirty-three of the Skiddys were mayors of Cork; William Skyddy in 1367. This Col. John Butler, of Westcourt, (nephew of James, twelfth Earl and first Duke of Ormonde,) wey was s. at his decease by his eldest son, JOHN GALWEY, esq. of Lota, one of the representatives for the city of Cork in the parliament of JAMES II. who m. Elizabeth, daughter of William Meade, esq. of Ballintobber, and sister of Sir John Meade, bart. and grandfather of the first Earl of Clanwilliam, by this lady he had a son and daughter, WILLIAM, his heir. Mr. Starkey succeeded his father 1st April, 1834. Lineage. preserved in the Museum, it appears that, in the time of HENRY II. the Bayntuns were knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Sir Henry Bayntun was knight marshal to the king, an office of high authority in those days, and his second son, Henry, a knight of St. John, was slain in Bretagne in 1201. Temp. HENRY IV. Sir Henry Bayntun taking part with the Earl of Northumberland, was beheaded at Berwick; and in 1471, Sir Robert Bayntun fought against the king at Tewkesbury, was made prisoner, and attainted. By King HENRY, Sir Edward was deputed to use his private friendship with Cardinal Pole, his cousin, to bring over the prelate to his majesty's views, but all his endeavours proved unavailing. He attended his royal master in his expeditions to France, and is supposed to have died there. Sir Edward died suddenly 26th July, 1679, and was s. by his son, HENRY BAYNTUN, esq. of Bromham, bapt. 17th November, 1664, who m. Anne, eldest daughter and co-heir of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, by his wife, the heiress of the ancient family of Mallet of Enmore, and by her, who wedded, secondly, the Hon. Francis Greville, father of Francis, Lord Brooke, had issue, JOHN, his heir. ANNE, successor to her brother. Mr. Bayntun d. in 1691, and was s. by his son, JOHN BAYNTUN, esq. of Bromham, who m. Catherine Brouncker, but dying s. p. in 1716, was s. by his sister, ANNE BAYNTUN, who m. first, Edward Rolt, esq. M.P. of Sacombe Park, Herts, son and heir of Sir Thomas Rolt, knt. and by him, who died in December, 1722, had issue, Thomas Rolt, of Sacombe, whom. He assumed the additional surname of Bayntun, and was created a BARONET in 1762, as Sir Edward Bayntun-Rolt, of Spye Park. He m. Mary Poynter, of Herriard, Hants, and had issue, ANDREW, his heir. Constantia, m. to Richard Forster, esq. Sir Edward died in January, 1800, and was s. by his only son, SIR ANDREW BAYNTUN ROLT, bart. of Spye Park, who m. first, in 1777, Lady MaryAlicia Coventry, eldest surviving daughter of George William, sixth Earl of Coventry; and secondly, Anna-Maria Maude. He d. 12th August, 1816, when the BARONETCY became EXTINCT, but the estates devolved on Sir Andrew's only daughter and heiress (by his first wife), MARIA BARBARA BAYNTUN ROLT, who m. in 1797, the Rev.
