She faith to him: Appoint that thefe my two fons may fit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom. And Jefus answering, faid: Ye know not what you afk. Can you drink the cup which I am to drink? They fay to him, we can: He faith to them: My cup indeed you shall drink; but to fit on my right hand, or on my left, is not mine to give you; but it is for thofe, for whom it is prepared by my Father. And the other ten difciples hearing this, were moved with indignation against the two brothers. But Jefus calling them to him, faid: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them, and that the great ones exercise over them their power. It fhall not be fo among you: but whofoever would be a great one among you, let him wait on you: and whofoever would be a chief among you, shall be your fervant: even as the Son of Man came not to be ferved, but to ferve, and to give his life for the redemption of many.

GOSPEL. Luke xvi. 19, 31,

T that time: Jefus faid to the Pharifees: There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who lay at his gate full of fores, defiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; but no one would give them to him; but even the dogs came and licked his fores. And it came to pafs that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bofom. And the rich man alfo died, and was buried in hell. And lifting up his eyes, when he was in torments, he faw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bofom. And crying out, he said: Father Abraham, take pity on me, and fend Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water, that he may cool my tongue, for I fuffer extreme torments in this flame. And Abraham faid to him: Son, remember in thy life-time thou didst receive good things, and Lazarus evil: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Moreover, there is a great chaos between you and us: fo that they, who would pafs hence to you, cannot, nor VOL. I. F

And he faid: Then I befeech thee, O Father, fend him to my father's house, for I have five brethren, that he may admonish them, left they also come into this place of torment. And Abraham faid to him: They have Mofes and the Prophets : let them hear them. And he faid: No, Father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will do pennance. But he faid him: If they will not hear Mofes, nor the Prophets; neither will they believe, though one thould rife from the dead.

OFFERTORY. Exod. 32. Mofes prayed in the prefence of the Lord his God, and faid: Why, O Lord, art thou angry with thy people? Let the wrath of thy foul be appeased: remember Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, to whom thou didft fware to give a land flowing with milk and honey. And the Lord was appeafed, and did not the evil, with which he threatened his people.

IN thofe days: Jofeph faid to his brethren: Hear my dream, which I faw: I thought we were binding heaves in the field: and that my fheaf arofe, as it were, and stood upright, and your fheaves ftanding round about it, adored my fheaf. His brethren answered: Art thou to be our king? Or are we to be fubject to thy power? Thefe dreams, therefore, and difcourfes furnished the fuel of their envy and hatred. He had also another dream, which he told his brethren, faying: I saw in a dream the fun, and the moon, and eleven ftars, as it were, adoring me. And when he had told this to his father, and brethren, his father rebuked him, and faid: What is the meaning of this dream, which thou haft feen?
