RADCLIFFE, ROBERT, esq. of Foxdenton Hall, in the county of Lancaster, b. 14th December, 1773, m. at Walcot Church, Bath, 14th April, 1796, Mary, fifth daughter of Thomas Patten, esq. of Bank, near Warrington, and has issue,

Mr. Radclyffe s. his father in 1783, and was high sheriff of Dorsetshire in 1813.

Lineage.

The family of Radcliffe took its name from the village of Radcliffe, near Bury, in Lancashire, one of decidedly Saxon origin.*

* EDWARD the Confessor held Radcliffe for a manor, with two hides of land, one belonging to Salford. It is one of the four places mentioned in Domesday Book. The village was so called from a cliff of red rock on the east side of the Irwell, opposite to the village of Red or Radcliffe. The Norman Conquest introduced much of the French language; hence the appellation of Rugemont was often given to this village, and used also as the surname of several members of the Radcliffe fa

mily, in the early periods of English History. This parish, doubtless, gave name to the family of Radcliffe before it was in possession of the Earls of Chester. The pedigree of the family assumes a de Radclive anterior to the reign of HENRY II. and the name of Henry de Radclive appears among the witnesses to the charter of Robert de Lathom, on the foundation of Burscough Priory, in the reign of RICHARD I.

His illegitimate son, John Radclyffe, marrying Mary, daughter of William de Catherton, of Catherton, in Lancashire, acquired that estate, and was father of JOHN RADCLIFFE, of Catherton, whose son, SIR JOHN RADCLIFFE, knt. of Catherton, married twice: by his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of John Knyvett, of Thirling, he had a son, EDMUND, ancestor of the Radclyffes of Broad Clist, in Devonshire; and by his first wife, Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Tunstal, knt. of Tunstal, he had a son, JOHN, who m. Katherine, daughter of Richard Molyneux, of Sefton, and left three daughters his co-heirs, namely, JOAN, m. to Edmund Ashton, esq. second son of Sir Thomas Ashton, knt. of Ashtonunder-Line; MARGARET, m. to Ralph Standish, esq. of Standish; and ELIZABETH, m. to Robert Radclyffe, second son of Alexander Radclyffe, esq. of Ordsall. 11. WILLIAM, of Culceth and Edgworth, and afterwards of Radclyffe Tower: usually stiled the "Great William." He m. He m. Joan, sister of Sir Thomas Holland, Earl of Kent, and relict of Sir Hugh Dutton, knt. of Dutton, in Cheshire, and by her, who wedded, thirdly, Sir Edmund Talbot, knt. of Bashall, had issue,

He left issue only by his first wife,

Sir John died at Ordshall, and was buried with his ancestors in the choir of the collegiate church at Manchester, 11th February, 1589. His eldest son and successor,

SIR JOHN RADCLYFFE, knt. of Ordshall, baptized at Manchester, 24th February, 1581, who m. Alice, eldest daughter of Sir John Byron, knt. of Newstead, in Notts, and had issue,

Sir John was slain in the Isle of Rhee, 29th October, 1627, and was s. by his son,

SIR ALEXANDER RADCLYFFE, of Ordshall, knight of the Bath, b. 27th April, 1608, who m. Jane Radclyffe, illegitimate daughter of Robert Radclyffe, fifth Earl of Sussex, K.G. by whom he acquired the manor of Attilborough, in Norfolk, and had issue,

ROBERT RADCLYFFE, esq. of Withenshaw, born at Attilborough in 1650, captain in the Duke of Monmouth's regiment, in the service of the king of Spain; m. 27th February, 1676, Anne, only surviving daughter and heir of Rowland Eyre, esq. of Bradway, in Derbyshire, and widow of William Tatton, esq. of Withenshaw, in Cheshire, by whom he had issue,

Mr. Radclyffe was killed in a duel, 20th February, 1685, and buried the following day, in Tatton Chapel, in Northenden Church, Cheshire. His elder son,

ALEXANDER RADCLYFFE, esq. of Foxdenton, baptized at Withenshaw, 17th January, 1677, became seized of the Foxdenton Estates, by virtue of the wills of his cousins, Mrs. Mary Byrom and Mrs. Susan Potter, and rebuilt the family mansion. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of John Bagshawe, esq. of Litton and Hicklow, in Derbyshire, and by her, who died in 1735, had issue to survive infancy,

11. Margaret, m. 3rd December, 1805, to the Rev. Peter Richard Rideout, of Hookswood, in Dorsetshire, and has issue.
