zo And again he said, where-
21. It is like leven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was levened.
22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching and journying towards Jerusalem.
23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto chem,
24 Strive to enter in at the straic gate : for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and Thall not be able.
25 When once the master of · the house is risen up, and hath Thur to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock ac the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know
you not whence you are : with what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of Mustard seed, which being planted in a Garden, becomes a large Tree, so that the Birds find room to build their nests in it. To what else shall I resemble it? It is like a little lump of Leven, which being mix'd with three Measures of Wheat; the whole is augmented by it. So also shall the Gospel, whose Limits at prefent are fo confin’d, be spread far and near throughout the Universe, and a very great Multitade be added to the little Flock of those that are as yet true Believers.
Thus he instructed the People in every Village and Town of Galilee thro which he passed by short marches on the Road to Jerusalem against the Feast of Dedication. At that time being ask'd by a certain person whether many or a few only should be fav’d, he replied: That the Gate was narrow that led to Life, and that therefore men ought to use their utmost diligence to indeavor to enter in at it.
But the time, faid he, will come when the Master of the Family fhall make fast the doors, and then many of you standing without shall knock, and earnettly intreat to have admission; but he will tell you he knows you not. Then Mall ye repły in

28 There ihall be weeping and gnathing of teeth, when ye shall fee Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you your felves thrust out.
29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.
30 And behold, there are lat which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
31 The fame day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unro him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
32 And he said unto them,
Go ye and tell that fox, Behold, your defence : Lord, we have eaten at the fame Table with thee, and have heard thee preach in our Streets ;, but he will still tell you that he knows you not, and send you
from him together with the workers of Iniquity. Then shall you lament, and be oppress’d with incredible anguish, when you shall behold Abraham, Isaac, and Facob, the Founders of your Nation, and all the Prophets, enjoying the Glory of the Kingdom of Heaven, from which you will be excluded. Moreover, many shall come from the remoteft parts of the Earth, from the East, the West, the North, and South, and shall feast with your Ancestors in the Kingdom of God. At that time you will fee fome that received the Gospel last, and Teem'd to be the most averse to it, obtain the first seats of Happiness: on the contrary, those to whom the Gospel was first preach'd, and whom it concern'd in the first place, Thall be poftPon'd as less deserving than the others.
On the same day, fome Pharisees came to him, and advis’d him to depart out of Galilee with the first opportunity, because Herod the Tetrarch of Galilee fought an occasion of putting him to death, as he had before done to John the Baptist. 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that comech in the name of the Lord.

Then turning his discourse to the Inhabitants of Jerusalem, he cried out : ye miferable men, who are wont to kill and stone those that God sends unto you! how often have I endeavor'd to gather you all to me, that being made my Disciples you might obtain Salvation, and that I might cover you from the Dangers you are threatned with, as a Ken fecures her young ones under her Wings? But you would not attend to my Admonitions : Therefore is your House left desolate and laid waste. For my part, when I am once gone from you,

CHA P. XIV.
he went into the house
2 And behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
3 And Jesus answering, spake unco che lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful co heal on the fabbath-day?
4 And they held their peace. And he took him and healed him, and lec him go :
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the fabbath-day?
6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
CH A P. XLIV.
the taking the lowest place at a Banquet, and inviting the Poor. The Parable
ON a Sabbath-day it happen'd that Jesus was invited to dine with a certain Pha
risce, a Member of the Sanhedrim, where were also present many of that Sed, whó narrowly watch'd Fesus, whether he would do any thing not agreeable to the Law of Moses. Being therefore in the way to the Pharisee's House, there was laid before him one sick of the Dropsy, who beseech'd him to have compassion on him. Jesus taking notice of him, ask'd the Pharisees and Doctors of the Law, whether it were not lawful to cure him on the Sabbath-day. But they held their peace for fear of being put to the blush by some unwary answer, as others had bin ferv'd. But Jesus taking hold of him, healed him, and dismifsed him ; yet knowing withal that tho they said nothing, they did not approve of that action, he hew'd 'em he had done nothing in the least repugnant to the Law, since, said he, 'tis a practice allow'd of, for which no body is biam'd as acting against the law; for if an Ox or an Ass fall into a Ditch on the Sabbath, you'l do your utmost to take him out on that same day : How much rather is it agreeable to the Law, to rescue a man from a lingring and dangerous Diftemper on the Sabbath-day? To which the Pharisees had nothing to object.
JOHN. CHA P. XIV. 7. And he pur forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms ; saying unto them,
8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, fic not down in the highest room, lest a more honourable man chan chou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bad thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place, and thou begin with shame to cake the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go, and fic down in che lowest room ; that when he that bad thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher : then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them chat fir at meat with chee.
1 For whosoever exalteth himself, shall be abafed ; and he thac humbleth himself, shall be exalced.
12 Then said he also to him thar bad him, when chou makest a dinner or a supper, call not
thy friends, nor thy brethren, Being now come to the Pharisees House, and in the room of Entertainment, be took notice with what contention every one strove for the uppermost Seat, and began thus to admonish them : When you are invited to a Wedding, do not immediatly take the highest place, left a more honorable person comes after, and thou be türn'd down with shame to make room for him. Rather feat your felves in the lowest place, that when he that invited you comes in, he may himself advance you in the light of the Guests, which will gain you respect andong them. So in all other actions of your Life, not only with respect to Men, but God also, behave your felves with that modesty, as rather to attribute too little than too much honour to your felves. For the Proud shall most certainly be debas'd by God and Men, while on the contrary the modelt man will be in favor with, and exalted by them.
Then addressing himself to the Master of the House : As often, faid he, as thou makest an Entertainment, if thou designet to have it pleasing in God's sight, do not invite thy Friends, thy Brothers, thy Relations, or rich Neighbors, who can re
