And ev'ry hope prove vain at last!

3 For pleasure I have giv'n my soul, And scorn'd religion's kind controul; For worldly views despis'd my God, And dar'd his sin-avenging rod.

4 O pleasures fled, what are ye now

Wak'd by remorse, ye live again,

To whom, or whither, could I go,
If I should turn from thee?
