THE ROYAL LIBRARY.

The Royal Library conforms, more than any other existing series of books, to Ruskin's ideal of a national series of chosen books-their text printed all on leaves of equal size, broad of margin and divided into pleasant volumes; light in the hand, beautiful and strong.

TH

HOUGH Francesco Bartolozzi was one of the most celebrated, as well as the most popular engravers of the eighteenth century, very little has been written about the subject, and there is no biography in existence which combines those admirable features, comprehensiveness and cheapness. No illustrated work on the engraver has been issued for many years. Tuer's Life, issued in a sumptuous form twenty-five years ago, though excellent in every way, is now out of date, besides being too expensive for the average art lover. It is therefore to fill this omission in art history that the proprietors of "The Connoisseur" have prepared this publication, which comprises a short life of the artist with an authoritative descriptive catalogue of his engravings, a list of prices obtained at auctions, and over 100 illustrations in colour and monochrome. This volume will form an invaluable reference book for libraries, and it should also be in the hands of all collectors and connoisseurs.

The work is issued in two styles; in paper covers at Five Shillings net; and in handsome cloth binding at Seven Shillings and Sixpence net.

To be obtained from all Booksellers, or from the Publishers,

EARLY WOODCUT INITIALS, containing over thirteen hundred Reproductions of Pic torial Letters of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. By OSCAR JENNINGS, M.D., Member of the Bibliographical Society. Demy 4to. 21s. net.

During the past fifteen years the facilities offered by new photographic processes have been liberally used for the reproduction in facsimile of the types, woodcuts, and marks or devices used by the early printers. No serious attempt has been made to reproduce the ornamental initial letters with which the best printers of Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Spain, beautified their books. Dr. Oscar Jennings has made a special study of these letters for many years, and has reproduced in facsimile some hundreds of the finest of them. THE BUILDERS OF FLORENCE. By J. WOOD BROWN. With over 70 Illustrations by HERBERT RAILTON. Demy 4to. 18s. net.

This fine book consists of a historical introduction, followed by a series of chapters which treat of the history and associations of the more important of the historic buildings of Florence. In the case of each building, an exact account is given of its architectural development, and important events or movements of Florentine history with which it was connected is fully described.

THE GENTLEST ART. An Anthology of Entertaining Letters. By E. V. Lucas. Feap 8vo 5s. "The Gentlest Art' is, of course, the art of letter-writing. Mr. Lucas is himself an expert in this branch of letters, and he has the true spirit of the anthologist, a good eye for colour, a delicate palate for taste, a good nose for perfume, and, above all, a keen sense of quiet humour. A charming, graceful book " Daily Telegraph. CHARACTER AND COMEDY. By E. V. LUCAS Second Edition. Feap. 8vo. 58.
