and bleffing it, broke it, and gave it to them, and faid: Take you this, this is my body. C. And having taken the cup, giving thanks, he gave it them: and they all drank of it. And he said to them: + This is my blood of the New Testament, which fhall be fhed for many. Amen I fay to you, that from now I will not drink of this fruit of the vine, untill that day, when I fhall drink it new in the kingdom of God. C. And having said an hymn, they went out to the mountain of Olives. And Jefus faid to them: + You will all be fcandalized this night on my account: for it is written: I will. Strike the fhepherd, and the sheep shall be dispersed. But after I rife again, I will go before you into Galilee. C. But Peter faid to him: S. Tho' all the reft shall be scandalized on thy account, yet I will. not. C. And Jefus faid to him: † Amen Day to thee, that this very night, before the cock hath twice crowed, thou wilt deny me thrice. G. But he spoke still more vehemently: S. Tho' I was to die with thee, I will not deny thee. C. And they all faid the fame. And they come to a farm called Gethsemani, and he said to his difciples: + Sit you here, while I pray. C. And he taketh with him Peter and James, and John: and he began to fear, and to be heavy. And he said to them: † My foul is forrowful unto death: ftay you here, and watch. • C. And when he was gone a little farther, he fell· flat on the ground: and he prayed, that if it might be, that hour might pafs away from him and he faid: + Abba, Father, all things are poffible to thee, put away this cup from me: but not what I will, but what thou wilt. C. And he came and found them fleeping. And he faith to Peter: + Simon, doft thou fleep? Couldft thou not watch one hour? Watch ye all and pray, that you fall not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the fleth is weak. C. And going away again he prayed, saying the fame words. And returning, he

found them again afsleep, (for their eyes were heavy) and they knew not what to answer him. And he cometh the third time, and faith to them: † Sleep on now, and take your reft. It is enough: the hour is come: behold the Son of Man fhall be betrayed into the hands of finners. Arife, let us go: behold he that will betray me, is near. C. And while he was speaking, came Judas the Iscariot, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude, with fwords and clubs, fent by the chief priests, and Scribes, and elders. And he that betrayed him, had given them a fignal, faying: S. Whomfoever I fhall kifs, that is he, feize him, and carry him away warily. C. And when he was come, going immediately up to him, he faid: S. Hail, Rabbi! C. And kiffed him. And they laid hands on him, and feized him. And one of thofe that were present, drawing his fword, ftruck a fervant of the high prieft, and cut off his ear. And Jefus answering, faid to them: + Are you come out as it were against a thief with fwords and clubs to apprehend me? I was with you every day teaching in the temple, and you did not take me. But the fcriptures must be fulfilled. C. Then his difciples leaving him, they all fled. And a certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth caft about his naked body and they seized him: but he, having thrown off the linen cloth, ran away from them naked. And they led Jefus to the high priest; and all the priefts, and Scribes, and elders were met together. And Peter followed him at a distance as far as into the high priest's court, and fat with the fervants at the fire, and warmed himself. And the chief priests and all the council fought for evidence against Jefus, to put him to death: and they found none. Tho' many bore falfe witness against him; but their evidence did not agree. And fome rifing up, bore false witness against him, faying: S. We ourselves

heard him fay: I will deftroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands. C. And their evidence did not agree. And the high prieft rifing up in the midst of them, asked Jefus, faying: S. Doft thou not anfwer any thing to what is alledged against thee by thefe people? C. But he was filent, and answered nothing. The high prieft afked him again, and faid to him: S. Art thou the Chrift, the Son of the bleffed God? C. And Jefus faid to him: † I am. And you fhall fee the Son of Man fitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven. C. And the high prieft tearing his garments, faid: S. What farther want have we of witneffes? You have heard his blafphemy: what do you. think of it? C. And they all declared him guilty of death. And fome began to fpit on him, and to hoodwink him, and to ftrike him with their fifts, and to fay to him: S. Prophefy. C. And the fervants buffeted him. And when Peter was in the court below, there came one of the high prieft's maids; and when she had seen Peter warming him, fhe faith, looking at him: S. Thou alfo waft with Jefus of Nazareth. C. But he denied it, faying: S. I neither know, nor understand what thou fayeft. C. And he went out before the courtdoor, and the cock crew. And again, when the maid faw him, fhe began to tell thofe that stood by, that he was one of them. But he again denied it. And a little while after, they again, who stood by, faid to Peter: S. Thou certainly art one of them; for thou art a Galilean. C. But he began to curfe and swear, faying: I know not the man you fpeak of. C. And prefently the cock crew again. And Peter remembered what Jesus had faid to him: Before the cock croweth twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he began to weep. And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and Scribes, and the whole council, confulting

together, carried Jefus bound, and delivered him over to Pilate. And Pilate afked him: S. Art thou the King of the Jews? C. But he answering, faid to him: Thou fayeft it. C. And the chief priefts accufed him of many things. And Pilate afked him again, faying: S. Anfwereft thou nothing? See what great things they alledge against thee. C. But Jefus ftill answered not; fo that Pilate wondered. Now on the feftival he was accustomed to release them one of the prifoners, whomfoever they should defire. And there was one called Barabbas, that was in prifon with fome rioters, who in the riot had committed murder. And the multitude being come up, began to require what he always granted them. And Pilate anfwered them, and faid: S. Would you have me release to you the King of the Jews? C. For he knew the chief priefts had delivered him up out of envy. But the priests ftirred up the multitude rather to have Barabbas released to them. And Pilate anfwering again, faid to them: S. What then would you have me do with the King of the Jews? C. But they again cried out: S. Crucify him. C. And Pilate faid to them: S. But what harm hath he done? C. But they cried out the more : S. Crucify him. C. And Pilate, being willing to fatisfy the people, releafed Barabbas, and delivered up to them Jefus, being firft fcourged, to be crucified. And the foldiers led him into the court of the palace, and they called together the whole company, and clothed him in purple: and wreathing a crown of thorns they put it on his head. And they began to falute him: Hail, King of the Jews! And they ftruck him on the head with a reed: and they spit on him, and kneeling down adored him. And after they had thus infulted him, they took off the purple garment, and put on him his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. And

they obliged a man that was paffing by, one Simon, a Cyrenean, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his crofs. And they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is interpreted, the place of Calvary. And they gave him wine mingled with myrrh to drink: and he would not take it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes, cafting lots for them, to know what each should take. And it was now the third hour: and they crucified him. And the title of his caufe was thus written: THE KING OF THE JEWS. And they crucify with him two thieves; one at his right hand, and the other at his left. And the fcripture was fulfilled, that faith: And he was reckoned with the wicked. And they that paffed by blafphemed against him, wagging their heads, and faying: S. Oh! Thou that deftroyeft the temple of God, and rebuildeft it in three days, fave thyself, and come down from the cross. C. In like manner the chief priests with the Scribes, infulting, faid to one another: S. He faved others; but he cannot fave himself. Let the Chrift, the King of Ifrael, now come down from the cross, that we may fee and believe. C. And they that were crucified with him, reviled him. And at the fixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth untill the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jefus cried out with a loud voice, faying: † Eloi, Eloi, lamma fabacthani? G. Which is interpreted: † My God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me? C. And fome of the ftanders by hearing him, faid: S. Behold, he calleth Elias. C. And one running and filling a fpunge with vinegar, and putting it on a reed, gave it him to drink, faying: S. Hold, let us fee, if Elias come to take him down. C. And Jefus crying out with a loud voice, expired *. And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. And the Centurion, who stood over-against him, a Or, Sculls, * Here all kneel, and pause.
