Terribleness of God's judgment. scribeth a fast, 18 and promiseth a blessing thereon.

howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of
the new wine; for it is cut off from your
mouth.

6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whofe teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

7 He hath laid my vine wafte, and barked my fig tree he hath made it clean bare, and caft it away; the branches thereof are made white.

8 Lament like a virgin girded with fackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9 The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD's minifters,

mourn.

10 The field is wafted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

BLOW ye the trumpet in Zion, and found an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land remble for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong: there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a defolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

4 The a pearance of them is as the ap11 Be ye afhamed. O ye husbandmen;pearance of horses; and as horsemen, fo how!, O'ye vinedrefiers, for the wheat hall they run. and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languifheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree alfo, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered : because joy is withered away from the fons of men.

18 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priefts howl, ye minifters of the altar: come, lie all night in fackcloth, ye minifters of my God for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains fhall they leap, like the noife of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.

6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blacknefs

7 They shall run like mighty men; they hall climb the wall like men of war; and they thall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks.

8 Neither hall one thrust another; they hall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the fword, they shall

15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand. and as a destruction from the Almighty fhall it come.

16 Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladnefs from the house of our God?

17 The feed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid defolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is with cred.

13 How do the beafts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made defolate.

CHAP. II.

9 They shall run to and fro in the city : they fhall run upon the wall, they hall elimb up upon the houfes; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

10 The earth fhall quake before them: the heavens fhall tremble: the fun and the moon fhall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their fhining.

11 And the LORD ball utter his voice before his army for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word : for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and, Who can abide it?

12 Therefore alfo now, faith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fafting, and with weeping, and with mourning :

18 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, flow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a bleffing behind him; ven a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

17 Let the priests, the minifters of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them fay, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen fhould rule ever them: Wherefore thould they fay among the people, Where is their God 18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

19 Yea, the LORD will anfwer and fay unto his people, Behold, I will fend you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be fatisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: 20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and defolate, with his face toward the eaft fea, and his hinder part toward the utmoft fea, and his ftink hall come up, and his ill favour fhall come up, because he hath done great things. 21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice for the LORD will do great things. 22 Be not afraid, ye beafts of the field: for the pastures of the wildernefs dofpring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their firength.

:

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will caufe to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the

latter rain in the first month.

24 And the floors fhall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.

82 And it fhall come to pafs that whofoever shall call on the name of the LORD fhall be delivered for in mount Zion and in Jerufalem fhall be deliverance, as the LORD hath faid, and in the remnant whom the LORD fhall call. CHAP. III.

1 God's judgments against the enemies of bis people. 18 His bling upon the church. FOR, behold, in thofe days, and in that time, when I fhall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerufalem,

2 I will alfo gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Ifrael, whom they have fcattered among the nations, and parted my land.

3 And they have caft lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and fold a girl for wine, that they might drink. 4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me,

Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coafts of Paletine? Will ye render me a recompenfe? and if ye recompenfe me, fwifly and peedily will I return your recompenfe upon your own head;

5 Becaufe ye have taken my filver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleafant things:

6 The children alfo of Judah and the children of Jerufalem have ye fold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them

far from their border.

7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have fold them, and will return your recompenfe upon your own head;

27 And ye fball know that I am in the midft of Ifrael, and that I am the LORD your God,and none elfe: and my people ihall never be ashamed.

9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up ;

10 Beat your ploughfhares into fwords, and your pruninghooks into ípears; let the weak fay, I am frong.

11 Affemble yourfelves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourfelves together round about: thither caufe thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

28 And it shall come to pafs afterward, that I will pour out my fpirit upon all Aleth; and your fons and your daughters all prophefy, your old men fhall dream 12 Let the heathen be wakened, and dreams, your young men thail fee vifions: come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for 29 And alfo upon the fervants and up-there will I fit to judge all the heathen on the handmaids in thole days will round about. pour out my fpirit.

CHAP. I.

19 Egypt fhall be a defolation, and Edom fhall be a defolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, becaufe they have thed innocent blood in their land.

20 But Judah fhall dwell for ever, and Jerufalem from generation to generation. 21 For I will cleanfe their blood that I have not cleanfed: for the LORD dwellleth in Zion.

2 And he faid, the LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerufalem; and the habitations of the 'hepherds fhall mourn and the top of Carmel fhall wither.

3 Thus faith the LORD, For three tranf greffions of Damafcus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they have threfhed Gilead with threshing inftruments of iron :

4 But I will fend a fire into the house of Hazael, which hall devour the palaces of Benhadad.

5 I will break alfo the bar of Damafcus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the fceptre from the houfe of Eden and the people of Syria fhall go into captivity unto Kir, faith the LORD.

6 Thus faith the LORD, For three tranfgreffions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof : because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom: 7 But I will fend a fire on the wall of Gaza, which thall devour the palaces

thereof :

12 But I will fend a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah. 18 ¶ Thus faith the LORD, For three tranfgreffions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punifbment thereof: because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it all devour the palaces thereof, with fhouting in the day of battle; with a tempeft in the day of the whirlwind:

Chap. iii. iv. 4 Thus faith the LORD, For three 4 Will a lion roar in the foreft, when tranfgreffions of Judah, and for four, I he hath no prey? Will a young lion cry will not turn away the punishment there out of his den, if he hath taken nothing? of: because they have defpited the law of 5 Can a bird fail in a fnare upon the the LORD, and have not kept his com-earth, where no gin is for him? 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it ?

5 But I will fend a fire upon Judah, and it hall devour the palaces of Jerufalem. 6 Thus faith the LORD, For three tranfgreffions of lirael, and for tour, I 7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothwill not turn away the punishment there-ing, but he revealeth his fecret unto his of: because they fold the righteous for fervants the prophets. filver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; 7 That pant after the duft of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn afide the way of the meek; and a man and his father will go in unto the fume maid, to profane my holy name:

8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the houfe of their god.

8 The lion hath roared, Who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, Whe can but prophefy ?

9 Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and fay, Affenble yourfe ves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midft thereof, and the opprefled in the midst thereof.

10 For they know not to do right, faitk the LORD, who ftore up violence and robbery in their palaces.

11 Therefore thus faith the Lord God,

9 Yet deftroyed 1 the Amorite before them, whole height was like the height of the cedars, and he was ftrong as the oaks; yet I deftroyed his fruit from a-An adverfary there shall be even round bove, and his roots from beneath about the land; and he hall bring down thy ftrength from thee, and thy palaces fhall be spoiled.

10 Alfo I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to poffefs the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raised up of your fons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, Oye children of Ifrael? faith the LORD.

12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, faying, Prophefy not.

13 Behold, I am preffed under you, as a cart is preffed that is full of heaves.

14 Therefore the flight thall perith from the fwift, and the ftrong shall not firength en his force, neither fhail the mighty deliver himself:

15 Neither hall he ftand that handleth the bow, and be that is fwift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rideth the horfe deliver himfelt.

16. And be that is courageous among the mighty fhall flee away naked in that day, faith the LORD.

CHAP. III.

1 The neceffuy of God's judgment against Ifrael. Toe publication and caufes of it.

HEAR this word that the LORD hath fpoken against you, O children of Ifrael against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, faying,

2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.

3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

12 Thus faith the LORD, As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; fo fhall the children of Ifrael be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Dama!cus in a couch.

13 Hear ye, and teftify in the house of Jacob, faith the Lord GOD,the God of hofts, 14 That in the day that I fhall visit the tranfgreffions of Ifrael upon him, I will alfo vifit the altars of Bethel : and the horns of the altar fhall be cut off, and fall to the ground.

15 And I will fmite the winter houfe with the fummer houfe; and the houfes of ivory fhall perish, and the great houfes thall have an end, faith the LORD. CHAP. IV.

1 He reproveth Ifrael for oppression, & for idolatry, 6 and for their incorrigibleness.

HEAR this word, ye kine of Bathan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which opprefs the poor, which crush the needy, which lay to their mafters, Bring, and let us drink.

2 The Lord God hath fworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days thall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your pofterity with fishhooks.

5 And ye hall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her and ye shall caftihem into the palace, faith the LORD.

your facrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:

5 And offer a facrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Ifrael, faith the Lord Gov. 6 And I alfo have given you cleannefs of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, faith the LORD.

7 And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest : and I caufed it to rain upon one city, and caufed it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

8 So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, faith the LORD.

9 I have fmitten you with blafting and mildew when your gardens, and your vineyards, and your fig trees, and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, faith the LORD.

10 I have fent among you the peftilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I flain with the fword, and have taken away your horfes; and I have made the flink of your camps to come up unto your noftrifs: yet have ye not returned unto me, faith the LORD."

5 But feek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pafs not to Beersheba : tor Gilgal tha!l furely go into captivity, and Bethel fhall come to nought.

6 Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; left he break out like fire in the house of Jofeph, and devour ir, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the fhadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the fea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

9 That Arengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortrefs.

10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

11 Forafmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn ftone, but ye fhall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

12 For I know your manifold tranfgreffions and your mighty fins: they afflict the juft, they take a bribe, and they turn alide the poor in the gate from their right. 13 Therefore the prudent shall keep filence in that time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may thall be with you, as ye have fpoken.

11 I have overthrown fome of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not return-live: and fo the LORD, the God of hofts, ed unto me, faith the LORD.

12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Ifrael: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Ifrael 13 For,lo,hethat formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning dark nefs, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, the God of hofts, is his name.

CHAP. V.

15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate : it may be that the LORD God of hofts will be gracious unto the remnant of Jofeph.

16 Therefore the LORD, the God of hofts, the LORD, faith thus, Wailing ball be in all streets; and they shall fay in all the highways, Alas! alas ! and they thall call the husbandman to mourning, and fuch as are fkilful of lamentation to wailing. A lamentation for Ifrael, ▲ An exhor- 17 And in all vineyards ball be wailtation to repentance. 21 God reječterbing for I will pafs through thee, faith their hypocritical service. the LORD. HEAR ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O houfe of Ifrael.

2 The virgin of Ifrael is fallen: fhe fhall no more rife: the is forfaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up. 3 For thus faith the Lord GOD, The city that went out by a thousand fhall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred thall leave ten, to the houfe of Ifrael.

For thus faith the LORD unto the house of Ifrael, Seek ye me, and ye hall live:
