CAMBRIDGESHIRE.

We know not whether the public prints have libelled the University of Cambridge, or whether the heads of that celebrated seat of science have libelled themselves by fraternizing with the French general Sebastiani, who is said to have been introduced into the Senate House while the Caput was conferring degrees, and to have afterwards dined in the Hall of Trinity College. We are farther told, with the most provoking gravity, that "he is said to be a good Greek and Latin scholar." For a statement of his other accomplishments, we beg leave to refer to the last volume of the Travels of Dr, CLARKE, of this university.

The decease of Mr. Fawcett, M. P. for Carlisle, produced during the last month a contested election for that city. The candidates were J. C. Curwen, esq. and sir Philip Musgrave, bart. At the close of the poll on the seventh day the numbers were, for the former 1950; for the latter 1310; when sir Philip declined any farther opposition, at the same time declaring his resolution to come forward on the first occasion against any candidate whatever. During this contest Mr. Curwen was accused by a friend <f his opponent, of having an iron heart, and being insensible to the calls of humanity. In refutation of this charge Mr. Curwen stated, among other circumstances, that during the great scarcity of corn he expended 30001, in buying that necessary article, for the purpose of selling it out at a very reduced price; and that 300 children were educated at Workington, and 200 at Harrington, at his sole expense.

The Secretary of the Hereford Agricul tural Society, states the following to be in his opinion, the most likely means of allevi ating the distresses of the agricultural interest: -1. The reduction of rents in proportion to the difference in the prices of grain at this period, compared with their prices at the time of letting; the new rent to be made vary with the rise and fall of the market hereafter, as tithe compositions have been so regulated in the parish of Marcle, &c. with the best effect.-2. The abolition of the Property Tax.-3. The abolition of the duty on farming horses.-4. A material reduc tion in the taxes on malt, leather, and salt. -And 5. A reduction of tithe-compositions, on the scale suggested above for regulating the rents and future leases of farms, or a new estimate of their value.

A correspondent of the Stamford Mercury states that much of the soil of this county is particularly well calculated for the growth of hemp, and that it might be cultivated to pay the farmer in a ratio equal to wheat at 31. a quarter, besides affording employment to the poor-it having been found that hemp may be spun, by a newly discovered process, into a finer thread than cotton, and cambrics manufactured with it exceeding in texture and durability those of France, Holland, and Germany. The city of Norwich is stared to have determined upon adopting the new trade; and it is suggested that spinning premiums should be offered as in Ireland, (and as in the county of Rutland, on a smaller scale, by the Society of Industry many years established in that well-ordered little county,) for the encouragement of it.

NORTHUMBERLAND.

It was not till the 19th Feb. that the bodies of the greater part of the sufferers in Heaton coal-pit, near Newcastle, were come at, when 55 of them were found in what is called the far workings of the pit. It has been asserted that these unfortuate persons perished of starvation, but there was nothing to warrant such a conclusion, as several pieces of the flesh of one of the horses was found wrapped in an old jacket. There were but two horses in that part of the mine; one they had killed for food, and the other was found tied to a prop without any marks. that could justify the supposition of its having been put to death by the miners. From the position in which the bodies were found, and from the candles stuck against the sides of the workings not being much burned, it is supposed that the sufferings of these poor men were suddenly terminated by foul air, It is conjectured that madness had increased the horrors of their situation, as most of the bodies were found naked.
