RARE BOOKS ON SALE BY

W. N. PITCHER & Co., 49, Cross Street, Manchester.

CARICATURES.-H. B.'s POLITICAL SKETCHES, A COMPLETE SET (917 plates) of these HUMOROUS and SATIRICAL SKETCHES by the inimitable H. B. [JOHN DOYLE], CAREFULLY COLOURED THROUGHOUT, introducing Portraits of all the celebrated Political Characters of the Day, THE WHOLE OF THE PLATES BEAUTIFULLY INLAID TO IMPL. FOLIO SIZE ON COLOURED PAPER, with the key to each plate neatly mounted beneath, forming 9 vols. impl. folio, half red morocco extra, T. McLean, 1829-48 cloth sides, full gilt back, top edges gilt, A VERY HANDSOME COPY, £60

Complete copies, having the full number of 917 plates, are exceedingly rare. "Among the many distinguished persons, who, within the last seventeen years, have occupied the most exalted stations in the country, there is scarcely one of whom posterity will not have, in some part of this series of Sketches, the most accurate representation that the pencil can convey: a representation in which the fidelity of the more elaborate Portrait is combined with a degree of freedom and spirit that the more elaborate Portrait very rarely exhibits. Nor is it only a collection of Portraits of the most eminent public characters of the day that posterity will possess in these Sketches; but so vigilant has been the eye, and so prompt the pencil of their Author, that there has scarcely been an incident of any interest in the political world, since the publication commenced, which he has failed to record."--Preface.

SPENSER's (E.) (FAERIE QUEENE: pictured and decorated by L. FAIRFAX MUCKLEY; with about 30 full-page illustrations in black and white, and about 100 borders, headpieces, tailpieces, etc., with an introduction by Prof. J W. HALES, and a Glossary; LARGE PARER, printed on hand made paper, the initials printed in RED, and the full-page plates PRINTED SEPARATELY on rough paper; 3 vols. 4to, handsomely bound in the new and original VELLUCENT" binding, with a beautiful design in COLOURS, PAINTED BY HAND, UNDER THE TRANSPARENT VELLUM, and gold-tooling, gilt edges, by CHIVERS, A SUMPTUOUS COPY, 1897 LIMITED TO 30 COPIES, £10 10s

This large paper edition was limited to 100 copies, of which the above is a special issue De Luxe, LIMITED to 30 COPIES; it has an additional set of the plates in dark crimson, and is bound by Cedric Chivers, of Bath and Bloomsbury Street, in his new vellum binding. A special original design by Mr. Fairfax-Muckley is worked under the transparent vellum covering of each volume, different schemes of colour being used. The colours are hand-painted, and combined with the gold-tooling the decoration is very sumptuous and artistic.
