HE ROXBURY CHARITABLE SOCIETY was organized in 1794 and incorporated in 1799. It had long been the purpose of those particularly interested in the Society to celebrate in some especial manner the One Hundredth Anniversary of its organization, and with this idea in view, at the annual meeting of the Society, held October 11, 1893, it was

Voted, "That a committee of six be appointed by the Chair to make arrangements for including in the next annual meeting a celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the founding of the Society, which will occur in 1894."

The Chairman pro tem, Mr. Charles Whittier, appointed as such committee, Rev. Percy Browne, Rev.

James De Normandie, Messrs. John Carr, Joseph G. Shed, Henry Wood and Gorham Rogers.

It having later been thought unwise to have the celebration on the same evening as the annual meeting, a special meeting of the Society was held May 15, 1894, when it was

Voted, "That the date of the celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary be left to the discretion of the committee having the matter in charge, appointed at the last annual meeting."

The committee promptly organized, elected Mr. Shed Chairman, and Mr. Carr Secretary, and chose as sub-committees, Messrs. De Normandie and Browne on services and church arrangements, Messrs. Shed and Wood on advertising, and Messrs. Carr and Rogers on invitations.

The committee decided on Thursday, November twenty-second, 1894, as the day to celebrate the Anni

versary.

During that day flags were displayed on the building of the Society, 106 Roxbury Street, and in the evening, at eight o'clock, the services were held in the First Church in Roxbury, Eliot Square.

About fifty especially invited guests had previously been received in the Chapel by the President and other members of the Executive Committee, and afterwards occupied seats in the front pews of the Church. A large audience, members and friends of the Society, were present, and the exercises were most interesting. Rev. James De Normandie, Pastor of the Church and one of the Executive Committee of the Society, presided in the pulpit, assisted by Rev. Percy Browne, Rector of St. James's Church.

The names of the officers of the Society and others officiating at the One Hundredth Anniversary, are given on the following page.
