INDEXING.

Time allowed, 2 hours.

1. Continue the index to the letters and inclosures printed below,* on the forms supplied to you, in a style similar to that of the subjoined specimens.

2. The index of each letter must be brief enough to be contained in two of the spaces of the form, and should consist of not more than ten lines of ordinary writing. If possible, it should be restricted to one space and to five lines of writing.

Confirming the news of the safe return of the Abyssinian Envoy.

Containing a list of Members of Parliament to whom he is known. Also copies of-

(1) a letter to the Consul-General at Cairo, who had communicated to him the Egyptian Government's refusal to allow him to go to Massowah;

(2) a protest addressed to the Governor of Massowah, against his detention at Massowah;

(3) another letter to the ConsulGeneral at Cairo contradicting the statements of the Egyptian authorities, and asking him to use his influence to obtain his release from custody in Suez.

* These were a portion of a Parliamentary paper of 1877.

DIGESTING RETURNS INTO SUMMARIES.
Time allowed, 21⁄2 hours.

N.B.-(a.) The work should be done correctly, neatly, and quickly: but in assigning marks more importance will be attached to accuracy than to quickness.

(b.) The paper put before you must not be mutilated in any way. Mistakes should be corrected, but no erasure is to be made. Calculations may be made on waste paper, which will be provided for that purpose, but no rough copy of any part of the Form is to be made.

Rule a Form, (which may be as wide as your paper will admit,)

like the subjoined specimen, and enter in the several columns the particulars given, observing carefully the following instructions:

1. That the Reformatory Schools should be entered in the Form in strict alphabetical order.

2. That all capitals and stops given in the specimen-form are to be exactly reproduced.

3. That the figures in three of the columns are to be supplied by you.

4. That in the case of Birkdale Farm, Essex, Kingswood, and Suffolk, the sum paid for rent has been by an error included in the amount given as the "Cost of Maintenance and Management," and must therefore be deducted from those amounts before they are entered in the Form.

5. That in the last column cases of industrial loss are to be indicated by the word "loss" written in brackets at the right-hand side, and fractions of a penny in this column are to be neglected.

GEOGRAPHY.

Time allowed, 3 hours.

1. How far is the distance represented by a degree of latitude or longitude, or either of them, a variable quantity? How are maps drawn on Mercator's projection? What is their utility, and in what respects are the inaccurate?

2. Give the positions of any ten of the following, and any remarkable circumstances connected with them: Angola, Auckland, Corunna, Davis Strait, Delhi, Denver, Goa, Herat, Mecca, the Morea, Ottawa, Rio Janeiro, Saskatchewan River, the Transvaal, Yokohama, Zanzibar.

3. Describe generally the volcanic groups encircling the Pacific Ocean. Give instances tending to show that volcanic action is related to the upheaval of mountain chains. What indications are there of a slow subsidence of the bed of the Pacific Ocean?

4. In the accompanying outline map of Europe mark the principal countries, gulfs, and straits, the rivers Loire, Rhone, Rhine, Danube, Dnieper, Volga, and the cities Berlin, Birmingham, Bristol, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Manchester, St. Petersburg, Turin, Vienna.

State approximately the distance in miles from Venice to the South of the Baltic, and from the Black Sea to the Bay of Biscay.

5. Name five large lakes in Europe and five in America, describing their geographical positions.

6. Give a full description of Turkey in Asia, the countries which it includes, and its principal rivers.

7. Describe any district in the British Isles which is remarkable as a manufacturing or an agricultural or a mining centre, and draw a map in illustration of your description.

8. Describe the position, direction, and general character of the following mountain chains: Andes, Alleghany, Ural, Altai, Carpathian. 9. What countries do the following rivers drain Murray, Orinoco, Amoor, Nile, and where do they rise? What is the cause of the annual floods of the Nile?

10. Explain the following terms: Alp, Cañon, Delta, Fiord, Isotherm, Steppe, trade Wind, Tropic, Tundra, Watershead.

N. B. In all your exercises attention should be paid to orthography, handwriting, punctuation, grammar, and correctness of expression.

7. What were the objects of the political compacts known as the Quadruple Alliance and the Holy Alliance respectively?

8. Describe the social condition of the Irish in the reign of Henry II. and of the Scottish Highlanders in the reign of George II.

9. What provisions for securing the Liberty of the subject were made by the Great Charter, the Petition of Right, and the Habeas Corpus Act successively?

10. What is meant by the following terms: Asiento, Concordat, Præmunire, Homage, Free Trade?
