Thofe Interpolations complained of by the Captain, were made by a Perfon fince deceafed, on whofe Judgment the Publifher relied to make any Alterations that might be thought neceffary. But, this Perfon, not rightly comprehending the Scheme of the Author, nor able to imitate bis plain, fimple Style, thought fit, among many other Alterations and Infertions, to. compliment the Memory of her late Majefty, by faying, That the governed without a Chief Minifter. We are affured, that the Copy fent to the Bookfeller in London, was a Tranfcript of the Original, which Original being in the Poffeffion of a very worthy Gentleman in London, and a moft intimate Friend of the Author's ; after be had bought the Book in Sheets, and compared it with the Originals, bound it up with blank Leaves, and made thofe Corrections, which the Reader will find in our Edition: For, the fame Gentleman did us the Favour to let us transcribe his Corrections.
