A Collection of Engraved Portraits of Washington

THE first authentic portrait of Washington was painted by Charles Willson Peale, and the most celebrated portraits are those painted by Gilbert Stuart.

Other portraits have been painted by various artists as follows:

These portraits have been engraved for different purposes, large and small, from the first engraved in 1772 until the present day, and represent the work of over three hundred different engravers, over one hundred of whom are American.

This collection is made up of 360 engravings from portraits by these artists, 244 of which are fully described in "Baker's Engraved Portraits of Washington."

Among the collection over 100 are not mentioned in "Baker," and comprise a large portion which have been produced since the book was printed, including a few early ones. The one here reproduced in this catalogue, being unique, but similar to the description of No. 431, which might have been a copy, as this was published "Feb. 26, 1801, by John Fairburn, 146 Minories, London,” and measures 128 by 98 inches.
