Οὐ γὰρ ἀνέπτυξεν τήνων εἰς ὄμματα μακρὰς
Α Σοφία σελίδας, τὰ κρόνω ταὶ σκῦλα φορεῦντι
Τήνοις ὁ Πενία κατέρυξεν ἐλεύθερον ὁρμὰν,
Τήνων καὶ ψυχᾶς ἔμβλυν ̓ εὐάνθεμον ἀκμάν.

Ast oculis nunquàm monimenta Scientia, plena
Annorum exuviis, conspicienda dedit;
Res dura, et miseris urgens in rebus egestas,
Mentibus imposuit væ! glaciale gelu!

Hått' ihnen Wissenschaft ihr großes Buch entrollt,
In welches jede Zeit den Schaß der Völker zollt ;
Hått' Elend nicht ihr Haupt in tiefen Staub gedrücket,

But Knowledge, to their eyes, her ample page,

Rich with the spoils of time, did ne'er unroll;

Chill Penury repress'd their noble rage,
