The Ward of Allerdale, above Derwent, is in the Diocese of Chester, all the other parts of the County in that of Carlisle, and Province of York.

This County is rich in mi-
neral treasures; the moun-
tains containing various
strata of stone, and abound.
ing in coa!, lime stone, and
lead, likewise the valuable
substance called wad, or
black lead.

The cultivated parts pro
duce corn, but are chief-
ly laid out in grass land.

The principal manufac-
tures are spinning and weav
ing cotton into callicces,
corduroys, &c. and
the
printing of cotton.

This County derives its name from the Cimbri or Cumbri, the aboriginal inhabitants.
