Es wird dem Lefer nicht unangenehm feyn, nach beendigter Lektüre diefes Romans, die Schilderung zu lesen, welche in dem Journal London und Paris vom Jahr 1798 im zweiten Bande §. 12. von dem häuslichen Leben eines Eng lifchen Landgeiftlichen entworfen wird. „Ich lange die en Augenblick, fo fchreibt der Verfaffer, aus Sommerfet/hire an, wo meine Frau mit einem unfrer kränklichen Kinder die heilenden Waffer in Bath und Bristol getrunken hat. Aber ehe ich Ihnen etwas von diefer reizenden Provinz, oder von dem Reichthum und Luxus der genannten Städte melde, muss ich Ihnen eine Predigerfamilie schildern, mit der ich in Verhaltnis gekommen bin. Sie werden mich nicht ungern anhoren, wenn ich Ihnen verfichere, Aehnlichkeiten mit dem Vicar of Wakefield in meines ehrlichen Freundes Haufe wieder gefunden zu haben. Sein Haus (denn Sie müffen mich diesmal von aller Ordunng loszahlen) steht auf einer Anhohe, und beherrscht vorn einen herrlich begraften Abhang ; rechts fieht man das Herrenhaus hinter hohen Bäumen hervorglanzen; links ist ein dichter Buchen und Ulmengang von des Predigers eigener Pflanzung, und hinter diefem fieht die einfe, altväterifche, aber ich weiss nicht warum, mir hafi ehrwürdig fcheinende Dorfkirche hervor, umgeben mit drigen, fchlichten Grabhügeln, zwifchen denen fich nur hin und wieder ein kleiner, mit biblischen Sprüchen gezierter Leichenftein erhebt. Sein Haus hat der Prediger, dem feine Frau etwas zur Mitgabe gebracht hat, gebaut, fo dafs es auf alle Bedürfnisse berechnet ist, die man auf dem Lande erwarten kann. Vorn ist ein Stall mit vier Reitpferden, eins für den Vater, eins für die älteste Tochter, die fchöne Peggy, und die beiden andern für die rüftigsten Sohne. Denn die Kinder reiten fast täglich aus, theils nach der nahen Stadt, theils zu den Nachbarn, theils zu armen Eingepfarrten, denen fie Rath und Almofen bringen. Der Vater ist ein grosser, fchoner,
