NOTWITHSTANDING the variety of works which, for centuries, have appeared in different languages on Turkey, Greece, Asia Minor, the Ionian Islands, and the Archipelago, a Guide Book for those countries has become essential since the means of communication with them have improved and multiplied. In the works of many ancient and modern writers we find the most accurate notices of the routes they have followed over separate portions of these countries; but, in order to render their meritorious labours available to the traveller in a portable shape, it became necessary to compare, extract, and compress their accumulated information, ethnographical and historical, within the narrowest compass, selecting only such portions as might secure to the genius of each locality its appropriate share of interest. The idea of a Handbook for the East naturally suggested itself after the completion of similar guides for Germany, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe.
