BOOK PLATES.

DESIGNS, PLATES, BLOCKS AND TRIAL PROOFS.

1. Design by E. B. Bird, Boston, for Chas. H. Taylor, Jr.

2. Proof from the engraved plate made by E. D. French, New York, from the design No. 1.

3. Three designs for book plates made by E. D. French for the Club of Odd Volumes. (See No. 1701 of this catalogue for a proof from the plate engraved by Mr. French from the design selected.)

4. Copperplate, engraved by E. D. French, from his own design, for John P. Woodbury. (The plate is steelfaced, and coated with wax, to prevent its rusting.)

5-9. Progressive trial proofs printed from the plate No. 4 while it was in process of engraving. With No. 5 the photograph is shown which the designer utilized in drawing the Woodbury Library interior in the upper part of the plate.

10. Copperplate, with the portrait of Thomas Gaffield, etched by W. H. W. Bicknell, Winchester, Mass., for the Museum of Fine Arts. (The plate is steelfaced, and coated with wax to prevent its rusting.)

11. Proof from the plate No. 10.

12. Woodblock, from a design by A. F. Iaccaci, New York, engraved by John Andrew & Son, Boston, for A. L. Hollingsworth.

I. E. BOOK PLATES IN PLACE IN BOOKS.

14. The Peter Daniel Huetius gift book plate, dated 1692, in "Memoires de Messire Jacques de Saulx", Paris: 1691. (On the fly-leaf: Fran Baring. 1824. London.)

15. The bookplate of William Lucy, Esq., of Charlecote in Warwickshire, in Fuller's "The Holy State", Cambridge: 1642. Below the plate named is another, belonging to a later member of the same family, and below that again, the plate of the present owner of the book.

16. Horace Walpole's bookplate, in "Le Gemme Antiche Figurate di Michel Angelo Causeo de la Chausse", Rome: 1700. Walpole's signature, with date 1740, is on the fly-leaf.

17. David Garrick's bookplate, signed: I. Wood in et Sc., in De Beauchamps's "Recherches sur les theatres de France", Vol. I, Paris: 1735. F, p. 108.

18. Bookplate of the "Library of the Duchy of Cornwall, Founded by his Royal Highness George Prince of Wales, 1783", in "Reliquiæ Wottoniana", London: 1672. On the fly-leaf is the plate of the present owner.
