Paffover. On which he ordered Peter and John to repair to Jerufalem, and there make ready the Paffover, which he intended to celebrate in the City together with his Apoftes; telling them that at their entrance into it they fhould meet a Man bearing a Pitcher of Water, whom he charg'd them to follow into the Houfe whither he went, and in his name to borrow of the Mafter a convenient Room for him and his Apoftles; who, faid Jefus, will immediately fhow you a large upper Room furnish'd; there make ready the Paffover. The Apoftles according to thefe Orders went to Jerufalem, and at their entrance into it, what Jefus had foretold 22 And they were 19 And they began exceeding forrowful, to be forrowful, and to 23 And they began and began every one to fay unto him one themfelves, which of of them to fay unto by one, Is it I? and them it was that should him, Lord, is it I? another faid, Is it I? do this thing. 23 And he answer 20 And he answer ed and faid, He that ed and faid unto them, 24 The Son of man 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as ic of him but wo unto written of him: but was determined: but the man by whom the wo to that man by wo unto that man by Son of man is betray- whom the Son of man whom he is betrayed. ed: it had been good is betrayed: good were for that man, if he had it for that man if he not been born. had never been born. Now when the Sun was fet, and the Hour approach'd in which the Jews were wont to eat the Paffover, Jejus repair'd to the Houfe with his twelve Apoftles, and there fat down with them. Whilft they were at Table he faid unto them, I tell you of a truth, one of you that now fup with me shall betray me to the Sanhedrim. Upon hearing this the Apoftles were fadly afflicted, not knowing whom Jefus meant; and every one ask'd him fingly whether it were Him he meant or no? Jefus replied that it fhould be one of the twelve; and that they might perceive he was not far from him, he told them it was one of thofe that eat out of the fame Dish with him; for the time is at hand in which I fhall be put to death according to the Prophecies concerning me: but most dreadful Punishments fhall befal the Man that will betray me; much better would it have bin 0002 for MATTHEW. Then Judas ask'd him whether it was him he meant; which Jefus own'd to him in a low Voice, without giving him any Reprimand, or fo much as ordering him to depart the Room. Whilft they were at Supper, Jefus took up the Bread, and having given thanks to God for his bounteous liberality to Men, he brake it, and divided it among his Apostles, adding thefe words: Take, eat, this is my Body which is broken for you; Do this hereafter which you fee me now do, not as a memorial of the Deliverance of the Jews from the Tyranny of the Egyptians, but in remembrance of me. Like wife after Supper he took the Cup fill'd with Wine, and having given thanks to God, he deliver'd it to his Apoftles, bidding them all drink of it, and telling them that this was his Blood, by the fhedding of which God. would enter into a new League with Men, and the Sins not only of them but of many others alfo should be expiated. 29 But I fay unto 25 Verily I fay un 15 And he said ununto them, With defire I have defired to eat this paffover with you before I fuffer. 16 For I fay unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and faid, Take this, and divide it among your felves. 18 For I fay unto you, I will not drink to you, I will drink you, I will not drink henceforth of this no more of the fruit of the fruit of the PAUL. Having thus faid, he took up a fecond Cup of Wine; and giving thanks again to God, he deliver'd it to him that fat next, and commanded his Apoftles to fhare it amongst them, adding that he fhould no more drink of that Cup with them, nor celebrate any other Deliverance, than that which they fhould enjoy together with him in the Kingdom of Heaven, after their freedom from all the Evils of this mortal Life. Tho Jefus knew the Defign of Judas against his Life (who, as we have related, gave himfelf up to the Delufions of the Evil Spirit, and determin'd to betray his Mafter to the Jews, but continued ftill in his Company, fo daring was his Impudence) and was able to execute whatever he pleas'd by the Authority receiv'd from his heavenly Father, from whom he came, and to whom he knew he was quickly to return; yet he did not obftruct him in his Defign, nor exprefs himself with leis tenderness to the reft of his Apoftles.
