Archbishop Usher, who often heard Dr. Manton, said he was a voluminous Preacher-not for his length, but because he had the art of reducing the substance of volumes into a narrow compass. "He was," says Charnock, "the best collector of sense in the age!" Dr. Bates also remarks, that "Dr. Manton was always superior to others, and equal to himself."
