AUCTORES CLASSICI GRÆCI ET LATINI.

FOLIO.

2677 APPIANUS Alexandrinus, Gr. C. Stephani, $9 Par. 1551 "Editio Princeps. The name of Charles Stephens does not often occur, and those who cherish scarce works, should treasure the productions of this elegant scholar." Dibdin. 2678 Archimedis, Opera, Gr. et Lat. cum Comment. Riuneti, very scarce, $10 Paris, 1615

"An excellent edition." Clarke.

2679 Aristophanes, editio princeps, apud Aldum, a superb copy, very scarce, $70

Venet. 1498

"The editor, Moreus Muscerus, copied the Scholia from the MSS. of ancient commentators. For this publication posterity is deeply indebted to Aldus, as he has literally rescued Aristophanes from dust and oblivion. It is a very beautiful volume." Dibdin. Mr. Dibdin adds, that it is neither very scarce, nor extraordinarily dear. This might have been the case nearly 20 years ago, when he wrote. At present, the exact reverse is the fact.

2680

Gr. a Froben. Acc. Hesychio, $20 Bas. 1547

2682 Aristotelis Opera, Gr. apud Aldum, 5 vols. calf, gilt, very fine Venet. 1495

copy, very rare, $190

"Editio Princeps. Uniting all the works of Theophrastus. Notwithstanding the imperfect state of Greek literature, and still more of Greek typography, at the period of this noble production, it is impossible to contemplate it without feeling a conviction that we have not improved in publications of Grecian authors. The editio princeps of Aristotle is unquestionably one of the most splendid and lasting monuments of the Aldine press." Dibdin.

To the above may be added, that this edition, which was scarce even in the time of Erasmus, is rarely to be found in the catalogues of the most eminent collectors. The same remark applies to nearly all the works issued from this celebrated press.

2683 Athenæi ed. Bedroti, $2 50

Basil, 1535

Of this edition Dibdin does not speak well, and Clarke is silent as to its merits or demerits. This may account for its singular cheapness.
