Lond. 1641 98 Bayle's (Peter) General Dictionary, Historical and Critical, in which a new and accurate translation of that celebrated work is included. The whole containing the history of the most illustrious persons of all ages and nations, particularly those of Great Britain and Ireland, distinguished by their rank, actions, learning, &c. With Reflections on those passages of Mr. Bayle which seem to favour Scepticism, and the Manichee System; by the Rev. J. P. Bernard, the Rev. I. Birch, LL.D., Mr. John Lockman, and other hands, 10 vols. calf, $100 Lond. 1734-1741 This edition of Bayle contains several thousand additional lives. It is universally allowed that it affords a very extensive and useful body of biographical knowledge. Dr. Birch was the chief contributor, whose superior abilities in this department have raised him to a high reputation. Mr. George Sale contributed the lives connected with the Oriental part, for which he was eminently qualified. The letters and papers in this collection throw the greatest light on the periods to which they relate, and are accompanied by references, and a complete Index to each volume.

N. B. A copy of this work is but rarely seen in any Catalogue.
