ELLIOT STOCK'S NEW PUBLICATIONS.

Just published, in small crown 8vo., cloth, tastefully printed, price 2s. post free.

ROBERT BURNS.

An Inquiry into Certain Aspects of his Life and Character, and the Moral Influence of his Poetry.

BY A SCOTCHWOMAN.

"One would have thought that the last word had been said about Burns, but his countrywoman-whose lucubration is published by Mr. Elliot Stock-really has something fresh to offer, and we are glad to say it is in the poet's favour. We are glad, because the tendency nowadays is less to whitewash than to besmirch, and it is something to find a man of letters defended rather than aspersed." -The Globe.

"The book is, no doubt, a piece of special pleading; but as the work of a woman it is notable, and should another and amended life of Burns come to be written, it will, no doubt, be found of service to the biographer, as the author has devoted much care to correcting the misstatements of earlier writers.'-Dundee Advertiser.

NEW VOLUMES OF VERSE.

Fcap. 8vo., parchment, with gilt top, price 5s., post free. THE MODEL, and other Poems. By COTSFORD DICK.

"This charming volume is a little casket wherein the grave and gay will find jewels to their liking. Mr. Dick's graceful lyrics are well worth reading, and his book is proof enough that poetry is not dead."--Musical Review.

"Among the poems of this volume the following are worthy of careful perusal and re-perusal: The Model,'' Ichabod,' and 'The Neophyte'; while the vers d'occasion are happy efforts in the way of versifying the topics of the day."-Literary World.

In crown 8vo., tasteful parchment binding, with Vignettes, price 4s. 6d., post free.

THE ROMANCE OF LOVE: a Garland

of Verse. By W. HENRY JEWITT, "A very elegant volume."-Literary World. "Has grace and also serious meaning."-Morning Post. Crown 8vo., cloth, 6s., post free.

A HEART'S OBSESSION: Sonnets of the City, and other Poems. By ROBERT STEGGALL, author of "Evensongs," "Jeanne d'Arc," etc.

"In deeply tender and truly musical lines the first poem records the blissful days after marriage, etc., then the change, bringing misery and despair. Truly a lamentable story, with little of hope left in it but the undying faith and love of the desolate wife.' Literary World.

"Mr. Steggall has command of a powerful style, and he has also the eye of an artist; his descriptive sonnets are singularly fine. One or two of them may be placed among the best in English." Vanity Fair.

"The more we peruse Robert Steggall's verses the more we like them. His style is original and his diction charming."-Public Opinion.

"Well written, and shows evidence of considerable research contains much that is interesting, and should be a welcome addition to literature."-Bazaar.

"The book is written in a clear, calm, dignified style. Its whole tendency is to raise the reader's estimate of the Bard, by revealing him in his true relations to those with whom he was brought into contact. It is got up in very successful imitation of the antique style."-Ayr Advertiser.

"With more than ordinary pleasure we have perused this admirable defence of our national poet.-Perthshire Advertiser.

Thoroughly practical, and a beautiful gift-book.

In handsome 4to., cloth, with Photographic Illustrations from Nature,
price 10s. 6d. post free.

GARDENS OF LIGHT AND SHADE.
By G. S. C.

"Visions of luxuriance and beauty undreamt of by the possessors of small gardens are revealed in this handsome little work."-Daily Chronicle.

In fcap. 8vo., cloth, price 35. post free.

OUR FOREFATHERS IN THE
DARK AGES, and WHAT WE OWE TO
THEM. A Sketch mainly intended for the Young.
By R. G. BLUNT.

"A praiseworthy little book, and beautifully got up."-Literary World.

SECOND EDITION.

Tastefully printed in antique style, fcap. 8vo. and appropriately
bound, 4s. 6d. post free; on hand-made paper, Roxburgh, gs.
THE PLEASURES OF A BOOK-
WORM. By J. ROGERS REES.

"Mr. Rees may be congratulated in all sincerity for his admirable book, which is brimming over with sound literary merit."-Public Opinion.

"Decidedly above the average of such works. Books furnish good material, and a bookworm can fatten on food convenient for him. Talk on books cannot easily be altogether dull. At least there is a large field to roam over, and Mr. Rees has a delicate appreciation and a refined touch in criticism. Books are evidently an enjoyment to him-an enjoyment he has made his readers share."-Guardian.

Now ready, 632 pages, in handsome crown 4to., morocco, Roxburgh binding, 425.

CHRONOGRAMS CONTINUED.

A Supplemental Volume to that published in 1882, containing at least 5,000 Examples, Collected by JAMES HILTON, F.S.A.

Numerous choice facsimiles of title-pages and pictorial devices, wherein Chronograms are conspicuous, add to the im portance of the work, and the pages throughout are adorned with tasteful head and tail pieces of sixteenth and seventeenth century art, chosen or reproduced specially for the purpose.

"England, Germany, Flanders, Holland, and Poland have all been ransacked, the consequence being that Mr. Hilton has gathered together 5,378 specimens, and as his previous book, brought out in 1882, contained 5,547, he has left nothing now, one would imagine, for any future lover of the art to discover."-Morning Post.

From title-page to colophon there is hardly a dull page, and besides being a source of genuine delight to the antiquary, this work should prove of interest even to our friend the general reader. The handsome and curious letterpress is embellished with several really remarkable illustrations."-Genealogist.

"This remarkable book is of interest to a large class of readers."-Antiquary. CHRONOGRAMS. Volume I.-A few Copies are still remaining of this volume, and may be had of the Publisher, price £2 25.
