Tender Accents of Sound: Spanish in the Chicano Novel in EnglishBilingual Press, 1996 - 285 páginas This work is the first book-length analysis of the strategic use of Spanish and its significance in the Chicano novel. This study analyzes the Spanish language elements that appear in nineteen Chicano prose narratives in English (most of which are novels) published between 1967 and the late 1980s. The author includes chapters on the language of Chicano literature, bilingualism in Chicano society and literature, language as a theme, the Chicano novelist as a translator of cultural differences, and "Hispanicized English and Fictitious Spanish". Among the works studied are Raymond Barrio's The Plum Plum Pickers, Ron Arias's The Road to Tamazunchale, Nash Candelaria's Memories of the Alhambra, Rolando Hinojosa's The Valley, and Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. A bibliography, index, and statistical analysis of the subject matter are also featured. |
