TO BE COMPOSED FROM THE MOST AUTHENTIC AND EXTENSIVE MATERIALS,

BY JOHN GIFFORD, Esq.

TH

HE. above Work will contain a copious and an Impartial Narrative of the French Revolution from its Origin to the Commencement of the prefent War, and it will alfo complete Mr. GIFFORD'S "HISTORY OF FRANCE," which is only brought down to the Death of Louis the Fifteenth.

Without endeavouring to excite attention by Profeffions, the Author contents himself with refpectfully fuggefting to the Publick, that he has impoïed upon himself the Duty of employing the greateft poffible Care and Attention in the Selection of the Documents of which he means to avail himfelf in the Compofition of his intended Work; and he prefumes to fay, that he poffeffes materials which furnish him with great and uncommon Advantages in that refpect. He trufts alfo, that he shall have Credit for that Fidelity and Impartiality which are peculiarly neceffary in difplaying the Events of a Period at once fo important and fo extraordinary as that of the French Revolution.

It may not, perhaps, be improper to intimate, that it is his Intention, hereafter, if the Course of Events should permit, to continue the Hiftory to the Termination of the Revolution.
