LESSON.

3 Kings xvii. 17, 24. IN thofe days: The fon of the mistress of the houfe fell fick, and his diftemper was very violent, fo that there was no breath left in him. She faid therefore to Elias: What have I to do with thee, O man of God? Thou art come to me, that my fins may be called to remembrance, and to kill my fon. And Elias faid to her: Give me thy fon. And he took him from her bofom, and carrying him to the chamber where he lodged, laid him on his

bed, and cried out to the Lord, and faid: O Lord my God, haft thou afflicted, to the killing of her fon, even the widow that giveth me the maintenance I have? And he ftretched himself out, and meafured himself thrice upon the child, and cried out to the Lord and faid: O Lord my God, I beseech thee that the foul of this child may return again to his body. And the Lord heard the voice of Elias, and the foul of the child came into him, and he returned to life. And Elias took the child, and carrying him from the chamber down to the house, delivered him to his mother, and faid to her: See, thy son is alive. And the woman faid to Elias: Now by this I know, that thou art a man of God, and the word of the Lord is trued in thy mouth.

GOSPEL. John xii. 1, 45.

AT that time: There was a certain man fick,

called Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and of Martha her fifter. (And it was this Mary that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whofe brother Lazarus was fick.) His fifters therefore fent to Jefus, faying: Lord, behold he, whom thou lovest, is fick. When Jefus heard it, he said to them: This fickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. Now Jefus loved Martha, and her fifter Mary and Lazarus. When he heard therefore that he was fick, he staid two days in the fame place. Then he faid afterwards to his difciples: Let us go to Judea again. His difciples fay to him: Rabbi, it was but just now the Jews fought to ftone thee, and art thou

going thither again? Jefus answered: Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day-time, he ftumbleth not, because he feeth the light of this world. But if he walk in the night, he ftumbleth, because he hath no light. Thus he spoke, and after these things, he said to them: Our friend Lazarus fleepeth: but I am going to raise him from fleep. Then his difciples faid: Lord, if he fleep, he will recover. But Jefus fpoke of his death; and they thought he had fpoke of the reft of fleep. Jefus therefore faid plainly to them: Lazarus is dead : and I am glad for your fakes, that I was not there, that you may believe. But let us go to him. Then faid Thomas, who is called Didymus, to his fellow difciples: Let us go alfo, that we may die with him. Jefus therefore came, and found he had been now in the grave four days. (Now Bethania was about fifteen furlongs from ferufalem.) And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother. Martha therefore, as foon as fhe heard Jefus was coming, went to meet him; but Mary fat at home. Then Martha faid to fefus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. And even now, I know, whatever thou fhalt afk of God, God will grant it thee. Jefus faith to her: Thy brother will rife again. Martha faith to him: I know he will rife again at the refurrection on the laft day. Jefus faid to her: I am the refurrection and the life he that believeth in me, though he be dead, fhall live and every one that liveth, and believeth in me, fhall never die. Believeft thou this? She faith to him: Yes, Lord, I have believed that thou art the Chrift, the Son of the living God, who art come into this world. And having faid this, fhe went and called Mary her fifter fecretly, faying: The Master is come, and calleth for thee. As foon as the heard this, the arose presently, and came to him: for Jefus was not yet come into

the town; but ftill was in the place, where Martha had met him. Then the Jews that were with Mary in the house, and were comforting her, feeing her arife up haftily, and go out, followed her, faying: She is going to the grave, to weep there. When Mary was come where Jefus was, seeing him, fhe fell down at his feet, and faid to him: Lord, if thou hadft been here, my brother had not died. Jefus therefore, when he faw her weeping, and the Jews alfo weeping, who came with her, groaned in fpirit, and was troubled and faid: Where have you laid him? They fay to him: Lord, come and fee. And Jefus wept. Then the Jews faid: See, how he loved him. And fome of them faid: Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was born blind, have prevented his death? Jefus therefore again groaning within himself, came to And it was a cave: and a stone was laid upon it. Jefus faid: Take away the ftone: Martha, the fifter of the dead man, faith to him: Lord, he ftinketh by this time; for he hath been there four days. Jefus faith to her: Did not I tell thee, that, if thou wilt believe, thou fhalt fee the glory of God? Then they removed the ftone and Jefus lifting up his eyes, faid: Father, I thank thee, that thou hast heard me. And I knew thou always heareft me; but for the fake of the people that are here, I spoke thus: that they may believe thou haft fent me. Having faid this, he cried out with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. And immediately he, that had been dead, came forth, bound hands and feet with grave-cloths, and his face was covered with a napkin. Jefus faid to them: Loose him, and let him go. Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and Martha, and had feen what Jefus did, believed in him.
