IN thofe days: The Lord fpoke to Mofes, faying: Go down from the mount: for thy people, which thou haft brought out of the land of Egypt, hath finned. They have foon forfaken the way, which thou haft fhewed them; and they have made to themselves a molten calf, and adored it, and offering facrifices to it, have faid: Thefe are thy Gods, O Ifrael, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt. And the Lord faid again to Mafes: I fee this is a ftubborn people: let me alone, that my wrath may be kindled against them, and that I may deftroy them, and I will make of thee a great nation. But Mofes befought the Lord his God, faying: Why is thy anger raifed, O Lord, against thy people, which thou haft brought out of the land of Egypt with great power, and a mighty hand. Let not the Egyptians fay, I befeech thee; he hath craftily brought them out, to kill them in the mountains, and to confume them from the face of the earth let thy anger ceafe, and be appeafed with regard to the iniquity of thy people. Remember Abraham, Ifaac, and Ifrael, thy fervants, to whom thou didst fwear by thyfelf, faying: I will multiply your feed as the ftars of the heavens; and all this land, of which I fpoke, I will give to your feed, and you fhall poffefs it for ever. AT that time: The festival-day being now half fpent, Jefus went up into the temple, and taught. And the Jews wondered, faying: How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? Jefus answered them, and faid: My doctrine is not my own, but his that fent me. If any will do his will, he will know of my doctrine, whether it be from God, or whether I fpeak from myfelf: he that fpeaketh of himself, feeketh his own glory: but he that feeketh the glory of him that fent him, he is true, and injuftice is not in him. I know him, becaufe I am m of him, and he fent me. They fought therefore to feize him, but nobody laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. many of the people believed in him.
