retired to an inacceffible fortrefs, and being returned to Dublin, fent him an absolute fubmiffion, though at the fame time it is faid, that he wrote to O'Con nor Sligo, intreating that he would by no means make a separate peace,

Sir Oliver Lambert, in the mean while, had driven the Burks out of their country, and coming to Athloan in December, O'Connor, Sligo, and Rory O'Donnel fubmitted; and the deputy keeping his Christmas at Galway, he received the O'Flaharty's and Mac Dermods, O'Connor Roe, and others into favour.

-But O'Rourk, being amongst those who still remained in rebellion, three feparate divifions of troops were ordered to attack him.

The fpirit of revolt was now almost extinguifhed; the infurgents were almost every where reduced to fuch want, as that they died more by famine than by the fword, and it is even reported that mothers killed their children in order to feed upon them, and that in the province of Munfter three children were feen devouring the intrails of their dead mother.

Though the caftles of Dunboy, Castlehaven, and Baltimore were agreed to have been delivered up by the Spaniards; yet the Irish under O'Sullivan Bearre, had furpifed the former of thefe, which however the English re-took after the most obstinate refiftance from the garrison that ever had been known in Ireland, the commander, though defperately wounded, as foon as he faw the English entering the caftle, endeavouring to blow up them and himself together, by throwing a lighted match into a barrel of gunpowder.- -This atchievement was followed by the defeat and flight of many of the Irish, and by the fubmiffion of many more of the lord of Lixnaw's whole force was mastered, the province of Munfter reduced to obedience,

obedience, and the whole island kept in awe by the victorious army of the English.

As to the earl of Tyrone, after having made a public fubmiffion, he received a pardon from queen Elizabeth, which was iffued by advice of her council, fo much against her will, that the granting it, is faid to have been one of the caufes of her death, though, in effect, she never enjoyed herfelf after the execution of Effex, and after long fuffering the utmost dejection of fpirits, this princes expired on the twenty-fourth day of March, in the year fixteen hundred and three, having appointed James the Sixth of Scotland for her fuc ceffor on the throne of England.
