THE AUTHORSHIP OF "SCEVOLA" AND "HAMPDEN" IN 1773.

The following letter from Benjamin Rush to William Gordon, minister at Roxbury, is of some interest as proving the identity of two of the many newspaper writers in the Revolutionary period that hid their personality under names drawn from Roman and English history. Letter number 1 of Scævola appeared in Bradford's Pennsylvania Journal for 13 October 1773, and letters 1 and 2 of Hampden in the Journal for 20 October 1773. The "two new productions" that Rush refers to are probably his Address to the Inhabitants of the British Settlements in. America and his Vindication of the Address, to the Inhabitants of the British Settlements, on the Slavery of the Negroes in America, in Answer to a Pamphlet entitled "Slavery not Forbidden by Scripture," both of which were published at Philadelphia in 1773; the Address was reprinted in Boston, that same year, by John Boyles for John Langdon. The original letter is now in the Emmet collection in the New York Public Library: DEAR SIR

It gave me great Pleasure to hear not only by your Letter, but from Mr Mifflin of your Happiness & increasing Usefulness in the situation Providence hath placed you. Please to accept of two new Productions which acknowledge me for their Author since I wrote to you last. The Vindication of the Address I hope will rectify your Notions concerning the state of slavery amongst the Jews. Excuse the Phrase. You know the faculty are a Sett of freethinking Gentlemen. I have sent Mr. Sam1 Elliott's a Copy of it with some Corrections, in Case he should think it worthy of being republished in Boston. We are preparing here to oppose the Landing of the East India tea. The Pieces in our News Papers signed Scævola are written by Mr Mifflin-those signed Hamden in Defence of Patriotism &c (inter nos) are written by your friend. We admire the public Spirit of the Boston Patriots. Continue to give Laws in this Respect to the whole Continent. are all well. Compts to Mrs Gordon. Yours Affectionately
