PREFACE.

IT is right the reader should know that these Letters were not only written in N 1802, but that a great part of them were actually printed in that year; since which, until the present moment, they have remained in the hands of the printer. Having made no pledge, I do not conceive myself bound to assign the motive which induced me to withhold them from the world, but the most cursory perusal of them, will render any further explanation unnecessary.

Many authors have travelled with an intention of submitting to their countrymen the result of their inquiries; and on their return home, have quietly composed in their closets, a series of Letters for the press, which every one knows, were never sent from the countries that they had visited.
