knowledge of thee, the only truc GOD; and of Jesus Christ, the messenger of thy truth

to men.

Reform the errors of the christian world; grant "that the worship of thee, o father! in spirit and in truth, established by Jesus Christ, may every where be restored; that thy moral laws may not be rendered ineffectual by human devices and false notions of religion set up instead of them; and that the progress of thy holy gospel may not be stopped and hindered by the wicked lives and scandalous behaviour of those who profess it." Put an end to all usurpation of thy authority, and imposition upon the consciences of men. Let all animosities cease among christians for diversities of opinion; and unite all in sincere obedience to thy laws, and in good will and kindness to each other.

Bless the king, and all who are in public authority, that they may be wise and faithful to promote the general happiness; and that the people may lead quiet and peaccable lives in the practice of religion and virtue. Visit and relieve all who are in misery and under affliction; and assist all thy creatures

in the several trials to which thou exposest them in this uncertain world, that they may be improved by them, and qualified for higher degrees of happiness with thee.

Extend thy goodness, particularly, to our relations and friends; enable them to withstand the temptations of the world, and lead them on in the ways of virtue and holiness unto everlasting life.

And now, o GOD! we recommend ourselves and all who belong to us, unto thy care and protection this night. Defend us' from all dangers and distressing accidents, and give us quiet and refreshing sleep, which may fit us for the duties of the following day. And make us ever mindful of that time which is hastening upon us, when we shall make our bed in the grave; that we may never live in such a state in which we may fear to die. Hear and accept us, O GOD! as the disciples of Jesus Christ, who hath taught us to address ourselves unto thee, our father, alone, and in whose comprehensive prayer we sum up all

our wants.

OUR FATHER! who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us, day by day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those, who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.
