AUTHOR'S PREFACE,

T

HE Defign carried on in this other Manual of Meditations, is not that of the Athenians, Acts xvii. 12. to spend my time, in telling fome new thing. But (in imitation of a better precedent, 2 Pet. i. 13.) to fir up those for whofe fake I write, by putting them in remembrance, that they may be mindful of doing, according to their understanding; tho' they be fuch, as need not to be taught, what before they did not know. That if I bring no news to their ears, yet I may excite fome dormant notions in their minds; to make them more fignificant for their practical ufe: and that even after my decease, I may still be preaching by these papers, to fuch as can ro more be my auditors.

Now if this will not pafs for vindication of my appearing, so often as I have done to the world; nor give fatisfaction to the question, Why I fhould be more forward this way, than many, more fit and able for the work? I fhall make no other return, but to fay, that as fuch do judge, they have good reafon for their abftaining; fo have I fuch reafons as I count fufficient for my writing. At which, fhould any murmur; rather would I bear their cenfure; than want fuch others kind acceptance of my labours, whom I fee caufe much more to regard: or than
