IT

MY LORD,

T is prefumed, that the History of a Nation, over which your Grace hath prefided with a dignity peculiar to yourself, and that equally to the fatisfaction of the people, and the honour of the crown, lays claim, with propriety, to your Grace's patronage.

never been fupported with fo much fplendour and magnificence, and the administration of publick affairs conducted with fuch prudence and unanimity, as when your Grace was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The grateful retrofpect, which the Natives of that Ifland ftill caft on this period of their History, their ardent wishes for a return of so happy an æra, in which the interests of the fubject were no less confulted than the glory of the fovereign, fufficiently speak your Grace's eulogium. Being precluded thus, the praises of a private pen, by the heart-felt encomiums of a whole nation, I beg leave to fupprefs inferior panegyric, and fubfcribe myself,

Your Grace's most devoted,

and most obedient humble fervant,

THE AUTHOR.
