The volumes, one of which bears the inscription "Deane Monteage, his book, given by his father January 1676," formerly belonged to Thomas Britton, the musical small-coal man, who died in 1714. Only a small portion of the contents, however, can have been written during his ownership, as the majority of the pieces contained in the volumes were not composed until a much later period. In the same hand-writing as the last-named pieces is a copy of "God save the king," with title of "God save our noble king." A portrait of Britton is inserted in one

volume.

Between the leaves of the sixth Sonata is inserted the pamphlet addressed by Richard Clark "To the Lovers of Research, &c.," in which he sought, by reference to that Sonata, to show that the song "God save the king" was known to Purcell.
