5 And when his difciples were come to the other fide, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jefus faid unto them,Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees. And they reafoned among themfelves, faying, It is because we have tak. en no bread. only this one to render them inexcufable; that as Jonas after having been three days buried in the Sea in the Belly of the Whale, was caft up again alive; fo Chrift, after he fhall be killed and buried in the Earth, fhall on the third day be raised again. 5. ¶ Having given this anfwer, Jefus turned away from the Pharifees and Sadducees, and left them, and went with his Disciples over the Lake; and as they were in their Paffage to the other fide, they found that they had forgotten to take Bread. 6. Whereupon Jefus ta king occafion from the Si militude of Bread to draw fome ufeful Inftructions for his Disciples, bad them take care to avoid the Leaven of the Pharifees and Sadducees, meaning their Doctrine and Hypocrifie, which was apt to fpread like Leaven. 7. But the Disciples not understanding his meaning, faid among themfelves; this is to rebuke us for our forgetfulness getfulness in in not taking Bread. 8. Jefus knowing their Mistake, faid to them; Why are you fo difturbed and troubled at your having forgotten to take Bread? Do you think I am concerned and speak about that? 9. Do eafie it would be for me to provide Bread, if that were the thing I was concerned about? Have you forgotten how I once fed five thousand Men with five Loaves, and and yet there remained no less than twelve Baskets full of Fragments? Do you not know how 1. And how at another time I. fed four thousand Men with feven Loaves, and there remained no less than feven Baskets full of Frag ments? 11. Why then are you fo dull and flow of underftanding, as to think that I fpake about Bread, when I bad you take heed of the Leaven of the Pharifees and Sadducees? 12 Then under. ftood they how that he bade them not be ware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharifees, and of the Sadducees. 13 When Jesus came into the coafts of Cesarea Philippi, he asked his difciples, faying, Whom do men fay, that I, the Son of man, am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptift, fome Elias, and others Jeremias, or of the pro one phets. 15 He faith unto them, But whom fay ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and faid, Thou art Chrift 12. Then they understood, that it was not Bread that he meant, but the evil Dotrines and the Hypocrifie of the Pharifees and Saddu cees. 13. After this, Jefus travelled through the Country about Gæfarea Philippi; and as he was walking in the way, he asked his Disciples, What they heard Men talk about him, and Whom People thought him to be? 14. They said, Some think you to be John the Baptift, rifen again from the dead: Others think you to be Elias, the Fore-runner of the Meffiah: Others think you to be Jeremiah, or some other of the Prophets. 15. Then he asked them, Whom they themselves thought him to be? 16 Peter answered; you are Christ, the Meffiah, the the fon of the living Son of the moft High God, God. fent into the World for the Redemption of Ifrael, and to discover the whole Will of God to Mankind. 17. Then 17. Then faid Jefus to him; Bleffed and happy are you, Peter: For this your Confeffion is not a bare humane Conjecture, but a thing revealed to you by the Spirit of God. 18. By your Conftancy therefore in this good Confeffion, you shall eminently be, what your Name fignifies, a Rock: that is, you fhall after my Refurrection and Afcenfion,be a firm, unfhaken, and immoveable Profeffor of the Truth: You ↑ See Acts shall be the † first Preacher of my true Religion to the Gentile World; and fo become as it were the first part that is laid of that Foundation, upon which my Church fhall begin to be built ; which fhall after 10. * 17 And Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Bleffed art thou Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I fay alfo unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church: and the gates of hell fhall not prevail a gainft it. * That the Rock here mentioned, is not the Confeffion, but the Perfon of Peter, feems plain from the Construction of the Words;but then 'tis alfo as evident, that by the Churche's being built upon him, is not meant his being the only Foundation of it, or having Supremacy over it, but his being the first Preacher of the Gofpel in order of time.
