Department of Military Science.

30. The tenure of office of Colonel (now Brigadier-General) Foster, R.E., as Director of Military Science, expired in the month of March, when Colonel Foster was appointed to an important office in the Department of Defence. In view of the difficulty of obtaining the services of a suitable officer to act as his successor it has been decided to allow the office to remain in abeyance for the present.

University Extension Board.

31. The following lectures were provided in 1916 :-
(1) A composite course of five lectures, given at New-
castle under the management of the School of
Arts.

(2) A course of five lectures on Life in Rome and Italy
at the beginning of the Christian Era, given at the
University by Assistant-Professor F. A. Todd.
(3) A course of four special lectures on Australia and
the Empire after the War, given at the University
by Professors Irvine, Peden and Wilson and Mr.
Meredith Atkinson.

There were also five Study Circles, all of them for women, each of which met twelve times for lecture and discussion. Miss Collisson conducted four circles for the Study of the War, and Miss Skillen one for the Study of English Literature.

The causes which brought about a diminution of work in 1915 were still operative, and the Board for its part felt that it ought not to attempt work which might to however small an extent- distract attention from matters of the highest national importance. It therefore decided that, while doing its best to supply ordinary courses of lectures where

application was made for them, and to meet the requirements of special classes of students, it ought, for the rest, to restrict its efforts to the provision of lectures on topics connected with the war.
