LETTER XV.

SWITZERLAND.

SWITZER

WITZERLAND is a small romantic country lying upon the Alps, between France, Germany, and Italy; more particularly between Alface and Suabia in Germany, on the north; Tyrol and Trent, on the east; by Italy, on the fouth; Franche Compté and Bourgogne, on the weft; and is the highest spot of ground in Europe.

Switzerland is divided into thirteen cantons, which are, Zurich, Berne, Bafil, Schaffhaufen, Lucern, Friburg, Solothurn, Schweitz, Uri, Underwald, Zug, Glaris, and Appenzel.

Their government was a free republic, the different cantons, though united by a common bond, being governed by their own laws. The Swifs fpeak French and German, but the former is fpoken only in the fouth and weft. The Grifons fpeak Italian.

On your first entering Switzerland, you would fuppofe it to be a chaos of barren rocks and craggy mountains, heaped one upon another, with perpetual fnows and gloomy vallies!
