The gofpel gives the law, I fee,
Sufficient ftrength to justify; 1
Yet I may fay in truth it is

The law that gives the gospel this. 2
For as the law no finner clears,
But who the gospel garment wears;
So none are justify'd by grace,
Unless the law-demand have place. 3
Again the law, which yet feems worse,
Gives gofpel-news condemning force; 4
Yet they are news that never can,
Nor never will condemn a man. 5
Dread threat'nings to the law. pertain, 6
Not to the gofpel's golden chain: 7
Yet all law-threats and Sinai's ire
To gofpel-grace are walls of fire. 8

1 Rom. viii. 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift Jefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Ver. 3, 4. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God DID, fending his own Son in the likeness of finful flesh, and for fin condemned fin in the flesh; that the righteoufnefs of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.

2 Rom. iii. 31. Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Chap. x. 4. For Chrift is the end of the law for righteoufnefs to every one that believeth.

3 Rom. iii. 19,-22. Now we know that what things foever the law faith, it faith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law, there fhall no fleth be juftified in his fight: for by the law is the knowledge of fin. But now the righteoufaefs of God, without the law, is manifeited, being witneed by the law and the prophets; even the righteoufnefs of God which is by faith of Jefus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference. Chap. v. 19.-By the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous. Ver. 21.-Grace reigns through righteousness unto eternal, life, by Jefus Christ our Lord.

4 John iii. 18. He that believeth on him, is not condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, becaufe he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

5 Luke ii. 10, 11. And the angel faid unto them (viz. the fhepherds,) Fear not; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which fhall be to all people: For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Chrift the Lord. John iii. 17. For God fent not his Son into the world, to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be faved. Chap. xiii. 47. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to fave the world.

6 Gal. iii. 10. For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curfe for it is written, Curfed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

7 Acts xii. 26. Men and brethren, children of the flock of Abraham, and whofoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this falvation fent. 8 Mark xvi. 16. He that believeth not, fhall be damned. Heb. ii. 3. How fhall we efcape, if we neglect fo great falvation? Chap. x. 26,-22 See figure 9 forecited.

The righteous law affoileth none
Of Adam's guilty race, fave one; I
Who being guilty, for this cause
By God's just law condemned was. 2
Yet free of guilt it did him fee;
Hence fully clear'd, and fet him free: 3
Yet, had not guilt his foul involv’d,
By law he could not been abfolv'd. 4
But he withal condemn'd and spoil'd
The law of works, which him affoild: 5
And now the law is (in thefe views)
The marrow of the gofpel-news. 6
The law can justify no man
That is a finner 7; yet it can

1 Rom. v. 19. For, as by one man's difobedience many were made finners; fo, by the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous. John xvii. 4. I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

2 Ifa. liii. 6. The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Gal. i. 13. Chrift hath redeemed us from the curfe of the law, being made a curfe for us; for it is written, Curfed is every one that hangeth on a tree.

3 Heb. vii. 26. For fuch an High-prieft became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, feparate from finners, and made higher than the heavens. Dan. ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconcili ation for iniquity, and to bring in everlafting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. 2 Tim. iii. 16. And without controverfy, great is the mystery of godlinefs: God was manifeft in the flesh, juftified in the Spirit, feen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Rom. ii. 13. For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law thall be juftified. Ifa. 1. 3. He is near that jullifieth me, who will contend with me? let us ftand together: who is mine adverfary? let him come near to me.

4 2 Cor. v. 21. God hath made Chrift to be fin for us, who knew no fin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 1 Pet. iii. 18. Chrift hath once fuffered for fins, the just for the unjuft (that he might bring us to God); being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.

5 Col. ii. 14, 15. Blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his crofs; and having fpoiled principalities and powers, he made a fhew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Rom. viii. 3. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God fending his own Son, in the likeness of finful fleth, and for fin condemned fin in the flesh.

6 Rom. x. 4. For Chrift is the end of the law for righteoufnefs to every one that believeth. Ifa. xlv. 24. Surely, fhall one fay, In the Lord have I righ teoufnefs and ftrength. Jer. xxiii. 6. In his days Judah fhall be faved, and Ifrael thall dwell fafely and this is his name whereby he fhall be called,

The gofpel too acquitteth none
That have not put perfection on; 2
And yet it cleareth none (I grant)
But those who all perfection want. 3
Thofe that with gofpel-clearance meet,
Muft by the law be found complete; 4
Yet never could (again I grant)
The gofpel juftify a faint. 5

All perfect perfons it controls, 6
And juftifies ungodly fouls; 7

1 The law of works, as fulfilled by Chrift, can and does fo, Rom. viii. 3, 4For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God fending his own Son in the likeness of finful flesh, and for fin condemned fin in the fleth; that the righteoufnels of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Ver. 33, 34. Who fhall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that juftifieth; who is he that condemneth? It is Chrift that died; yea rather, that is rifen again, who is even at the right-hand of God, who alfo maketh interceffion for us.

2 Rom. iii. 21, 22. But now the righteoufnefs of God without the law is manifefted, being witneffed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousnefs of God, which is by the faith of Jefus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference.

3 Rom. iv. 5. To him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteoulness.

4 1 Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who, of God, is made uuto us wifdom, and righteoufnels, and fanctification, and redemption. Col. ii. And ye are complete in him, which is the Head of all principality and power.

5 Matth. ix. 13.-I am not come to call the righteous, but finners to repentance. Rom. iii. 10. There is none righteous, no not one. Chap. ix. 30, 31, 32. What fhall we fay then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteoufnefs, have attained to righteoufnels, even the righteoutnets which is of faith but Ifrael, which followed after the law of righteoufnels, hath not attained to the law of righteoufnels. Wherefore? Because they fought it not by faith, but, as it were, by the works of the law. Chap. x. 3. Ifrael being ignorant of God's righteoulness, and going about to establish their own righteoufnefs, have not fubmitted themfelves unto the righteoufnels of God. 1 Tim. i. 15. This is a faithful laying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Chrift Jefus came into the world to fave finners; of whom I am chief.

6 Matth. xxi. 31. Jefus faith unto them (viz. the Pharifees,) Verily I fay unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. Luke xviii. 9,-14. And Jefus pake this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and defpited others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharifee, and the other a publi can. The Pharifee tood and prayed thus with himfelf, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjuft, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I poffefs. And the publican ftanding afar off, would not lift up fo much as his eyes unto heaven, but fmote upon his breast, faying, God be merciful to me a finner. I tell you, this man went down to his houfe juftified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself, fhall be abafed; and he that humbleth

himself, shall be exalted. Ver. 21, 22. And he (viz the ruler faid, All these have I kept from my youth up. Now when Jefus heard thefe things, he faid unto him, Yet lackeit thon one thing; fell all that thou haft, and distribute unto the poor, and thou fhalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

7 Rom iv. 5, 6. To him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteoufnefs. Even as David also defcribeth the bleiledness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.

1 Tit. ii. 11,-14. The grace of God that bringeth falvation, hath appeared to all men; teaching us, that denying ungodlinefs, and worldly lufts, we fhould live foberly, righteously, and godly in this prefent world; looking for that bleffed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jefus Chrift: who gave himfelf for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himfelf a peculiar people, zealous of good works.Chap. iii. 4, 5. After that the kindnefs and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteoufnefs which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghoit. Ver. 8. This is a faithful faying, and thefe things I will that thou affirm conftantly, that they which have believed in God, might be careful to maintain good works: thefe things are good and profitable unto men.

2 1 Cor. xv. 56.-The ftrength of fin is the law. Rom. iv. 14. Sin fhall not have dominion over your: for ye are not urder the law, but under grace. Chap. x. 3. Ifrael being ignorant of God's righteoufnefs, and going about to eftablish their own righteoufnefs, have not fubmitted themfelves unto the righteoufhefs of God.

3 a. xli. 21. The Lord is well-pleafed for his righteoufaefs fake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. Matth. iii. 17. And lo, a voice - from heaven, faying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.

4 Rom. ix. 31, 32, 33. But Ifrael, which followed after the law of righteoufnefs, hath not attained to the law of righteoufnels? Wherefore? Because they fought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law: for they ftumbled at that ftumbling-ftone; as it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a flumabling-tone, and rock of offence; and whofoever believeth on him, shall not be athamed.

5 Rom. vii. 7. What fhall we fay then? Is the law fin' God forbid. Nay, I had not known fin, but by the law; for I had not known luft, except the law had faid, Thou shalt not covet. Ver. 10. And the commandment which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. Ver. 12. Wherefore the law is holy; and the commandment holy, and juft, and good.

6 Rom. x. 5,-9. For Motes defcribeth the righteoutnefs which is of the law, That the man, which doth these things, fhall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith fpeaketh on this wile, Say not in thine heart, Who fhall afcend into heaven? (that is, to bring Chrift down from above :) or, Who fhall defcend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Chrift again from the dead.) But what faith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is the word of faith which we preach, That if thou thalt confefs with thy

1 Rom. iii. 31. Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid; yea, we eftablith the law.

2 Gal. iv. 21,-26. Tell me, ye that defire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two fons; the one by abond-maid, the other by a free woman. But he who was of the bond-woman, was born after the Reh; but he of the free-woman was by promife. Which things are an allegory; for thefe are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and anfwereth to Jerufalem, which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerufalem which is above, is free, which is the mother of us all.

3 Pfalm lxxxv. 28. Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kiffed each other.

4 Matth. xxiii. 23. Wo unto you, fcribes and Pharifees, hypocrites; for ye pay tithes of mint, and annife, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: thefe ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Rom. ii. 23. Thou that makeft thy boat of the law, through breaking the law, dishonoureft thou God? Verie 45, 46. For circumcifion verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcifion is made uncircumcision. There. fore, if the uncircumcifion keep the righteousness of the law, fhall not his uncircumcifion be counted for circumcifion? Matth. xix. 6. What God hath joined together, let no man put alunder. Chap. iii. 15. Aud Jefus aufwering, faid unto him (viz. John), Suffer it to be so now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteouinets. Then he fuffered him. Chap. v. 17. Think not that I am come to deftroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to deftroy, but to fulfil. Ver. 19, 20. Whosoever therefore fhall break one of these least commandments, and fhall teach men fo, he fhall be called the leaft in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever thall do, and teach them, the fame fhall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I lay unto you, That except your righteoufhefs fhall exceed the righteoufness of the Scribes and Pharifees, ye fhall in no cafe eater into the kingdom of heaven. 1 John v. 6. This is he that came by water and blood, evea Jefus Chrift; not by water only, bat by water and blood: and it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is trath.

5 Gal. i. 6, 7, 8. I marvel, that ye are fo foon removed from him that called you into the grace of Chrift, unto another gospel : which is not another; but there be fome that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gofpel unto you,
