PUBLISHED AND FOR SALE BY

PERKINS & MARVIN,

114 Washington Street, Boston.

THE NEW TESTAMENT, arranged in Historical and Chronological order, with copious Notes on the principal subjects of Theology, &c. By the Rev. GEORGE TOWNSEND, M. A., Prebendary of Durham, &c. Revised, divided into paragraphs, &c. with a choice and copious selection of parallel passages, given by the Rev. T. W. COIT, D. D., President of Transylvania University. pp. 927.

From the Boston Recorder.

This work was published several years since in Great Britain, and there met with great and deserved popularity. It has been but little known in this country, in consequence partly of the expensiveness of the English editions, and partly, of the small number among either the clergy or laity, here, who have learned duly to appreciate works of this character. We congratulate the Christian public that it is at length brought within their reach, in a style of great beauty and elegance, and at a cost that will terrify no man of ordinary means from possessing it, if he value a correct knowledge of the word of God beyond "the gold of Ophir."

A spirit of candor overspreads the whole work, so far as our examination has gone; and a spirit of purity too, that inquires in simplicity and sincerity, "What saith the Lord?" The general doctrinal views of the author are thus clearly expressed; "I believe the death of Christ to be a mysterious atonement for the sins of man. I have no hope of everlasting happiness, but from my faith in this mysterious atonement. I believe this doctrine to be the one peculiar, fundamental and characteristic truth of revelation. I humbly prostrate my reason to the God who has given revelation to guide us, as the best proof of my most rational homage to the Deity; and I pray that the consolation which I derive from the faith in the atonement of our only Lord and Saviour, may never be shaken by the presumptuous conclusions, and the shallow speculations of the philosophy which rejects revelation."

We cannot but regard this as one of the richest contributions to the cause of theological literature, ever made by the American press. It brings a vast amount of invaluable criticism within the reach of the mere English reader; and assists him in comprehending the scope and aim of the several inspired writers, while it removes the obscurity that rests on many isolated passages, and elucidates the harmony and connection of the various parts of the sacred volume.

MEMOIR OF REV. EBENEZER PORTER, D. D., late President of the Theological Seminary, Andover. By LYMAN MATTHEWS, Pastor of the South Church, Braintree.

From the Boston Recorder.

And after the careful and deeply interested perusal of the volume before us, we have no hesitation in pronouncing it one of the most attractive and valuable biographies that has issued from the press for many years. Nor is this opinion hastily formed or inconsiderately uttered. Were it our business to prepare a labored review of it, our reasons should be given at full length, but we can

not do it here.

Any man who wishes to learn how great things may be expected, attempted and accomplished, under all the disadvantages of complicated bodily infirmities, ought to study this volume. And every one who would gladly see how the great principle of doing all things for God, may be fully carried out into all the ramifications of duty, ought to study this volume. And the man who can rise from the study of it, without an understanding enlightened, a heart improved, a conscience quickened and a resolution prayerfully and solemnly formed, to live more holily and walk more humbly than he has been wont to do, ought seriously to question himself, whether he have the love of God in his heart.
