VALUABLE WORKS

PUBLISHED BY

PERKINS, MARVIN, & CO.

No. 114 Washington Street, Boston.

A MEMOIR OF REV. ALVAN HYDE, D. D. of Lee, Mass. with a Portrait.

This volume presents to the public the diary and letters of one whom the Lord honored as a useful laborer in his vineyard. As it was very remote from his feelings, while living, to seek his own glory, er to take any pre-eminence among his brethren, so it is no part of the design of the compiler of these papers, to exhibit him before his readers as an extraordinary man. In his diary, which is but little more than a brief notice annually, of some of the providences of God toward him and his family, with his reflections upon them, are such feelings expressed as every man, under similar circumstances, may be supposed to indulge; and his letters are such, as grew out of the occasions that called them forth the effusions of faithful friendship, or parental kindness.

PLEASING GOD, or A GUIDE TO THE CONSCIENTIOUS. By Rev. Robert Phillip, of Maberly Chapel, London. Author of 'Guide to the Thoughtful,' &c.

Let us inquire how far it has been our study to please God. It will do us no harm to examine ourselves on this point.

MEMOIR OF ANNA JANE LINNARD. By Rev. Robert Baird. With an Introduction by Hon. Theodore Frelinghuysen, and a Letter from Rev. William Neill, D. D.

AN INQUIRY INTO THE ACCORDANCY OF WAR with the principles of Christianity, and an examination of the philosophical reasoning by which it is defended, with observations on the causes of War, and some of its effects. By Jonathan Dymond. With a dedication to Sunday School Teachers and Scholars, and Notes, by Thomas Smith Grimké. Together with an Appendix, containing extracts from several of his writings, vindicating or illustrating the principles of Peace.

A MEMOIR OF MARGARET AND HENRIETTA FLOWER. By Mrs. Sigourney. With an engraving.

SELECT LETTERS OF PLINY THE YOUNGER, with Notes, illustrative of the manners, customs, and laws of the ancient Romans. For the use of schools.

THE PARAGRAPH BIBLE. The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testament, translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. The text is arranged in paragraphs, such as the sense requires; the divisions of chapters and verses being noted in the margin, for reference.

Lest any one who sees this Bible should imagine that it is a new translation, or an amendment of the old, he is assured that not a word is altered from the common copies. The arrangement is new, and is intended to prove that the Bible has beauties, which have hitherto been obscured by an improper and almost ridiculous subdivision of its sacred contents.

To Ministers, to Students of Theology, to the Elders, Deacons, &c. and to the members of Christian churches, to literary men who have complained of the obscurity of the Bible, and to all lovers of Truth, this edition, the result of much labor and care, is respectfully dedicated.

BOOK FOR PARENTS. The Genius and Design of the Domestic Constitution, with its untransferable obligations and peculiar advantages. By Christopher Anderson. From the Edinburgh edition. With an Introductory Notice, by Rev. Dr. Wisner.

AMERICAN QUARTERLY REGISTER.

It is in contemplation to enrich the next volume of the Register, commencing August, 1835, with one or more portraits of distinguished clergymen. Each likeness will be accompanied with a biographical notice. Our ability, however, to make these and other improvements, will depend very much on an increase of patronage to the publication, and the payment of sums already due. A list of the reformed ministers in France, accompanied with other French ecclesiastical statistics, will soon be inserted; also some interesting statistics respecting Great Britain. We have a large amount of materials on hand, which have been accumulating during the publication of the list of graduates. We shall complete that list in our next number.

The Register is published on the first days of August, November, February, and May. Each number will contain from 80 to 90 pages, making a volume of 320 or 340 pages, annually. A list of agents is inserted on the cover of each number. The work is put at the low price of one dollar and fifty cents, with the expectation that there will be a large subscription. On no other ground could it be supported. It will be sent gratuitously to all persons who give to the American Education Society $75 per annum, or the amount of a temporary scholarship.
