Each number will contain from 60 to 70 pages, and the whole volume, from 250 to 300. The work will be put at the low price of one dollar in advance. Agents are appointed in many of the large towns in the United States, to whom payments may be made. A list will be found below. Single subscribers are expected to make payment in advance. The Quarterly Register will be sent gratis, to all who give to the American Education Society $75 a year, or the amount of a tempo- rary scholarship. Arrangements for the Future. Preparations are making to furnish for the Register a history of the various colleges in this country. We also propose to give a complete list of all the Congregational ministers who have been settled in the State of Massachusetts since the settlement of the country, accompanied with other details Various individuals, well acquainted with the ecclesiastical condition of the country, will render their assistance. The same details will probably be given in regard to the State of New Hampshire, and other portions of the country. Some articles intended for the present number, have been excluded in consequence of the length of the lists of ministers. We were not able to procure in season the minutes of the Evangelical Lutheran and of some other denominations. Future numbers of the Register will contain not far from eighty or ninety pages each, or an addition over the first and second numbers of the present volume, of about sixteen or twenty pages. AMERICAN QUARTERLY OBSERVER. THIS publication is issued on the first days of July, October, January, and April. It will be comprised in two volumes, ef at least 400 pages each. The price for the two volumes is four dollars in advance. Each number will contain reviews of new publications, essays, notices and critical remarks on works recently issued from the press, literary intelligence, view of public affairs, and obituary notices. Recommendation. The great object proposed in the establishment of the American Quarterly Observer, is the presentation of intellectual, political, scientific and literary, as well as moral, subjects, in their relations to the great principles of religion, received by all evangelical denominations, and to the highest interests of the whole human race. A publication of such a character, well sustained, will certainly be an honor to our country, and cannot fail to accomplish a large amount of good. And from the arrangements, domestic and foreign, made by the editor and his enterprising publishers, and from the numbers already issued, we are led confidently to hope that it will be well sustained. SAMUEL HUBBARD, Boston, Jan. 1, 1834. What constitutes a Call to the Christian Ministry, and what are the proper qualifications for that work? One hundred dollars have been placed in the hands of the subscriber, to be given to the writer of the best tract on the above subject. The judges are Rev. Dr. Fay of Charlestown, Rev. Dr. Tyler of Portland, and Rev. Dr. Hawes of Hartford. The essay intended for the prize, must be in the hands of the Committee on or before the fifteenth day of May, 1834. The great object of the essay should be, to furnish those who are, or who may be, looking forward to the ministry, with the proper directions in respect to corporeal, mental, and moral qualifications, by which they may judge of their fitness for the work. The kind and amount of acquired talents necessary for the proper discharge of the duties of the ministry, should be distinctly stated. The tract may also serve as a manual for clergymen and others, who are called to give advice to young men, respecting this subject. It should not fall short of 16, nor much exceed 24 printed duodecimo pages. The manuscripts should be sent to the subscriber, at the rooms of the American Education Society, No. 52, Washington street, Boston, each accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the name of the writer.
