BAYARD; THIS MEMORIAL IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED BY ONE WHO HAS ENJOYED THE BENEFIT OF HIS COUNSELS AND BEEN HONORED BY HIS FRIENDSHIP. I wear the name of Christ my God, So name me not from man! And my broad country Catholic Hath neither tribe nor clan: Its rulers are an endless line Through all the world that went, Commissioned from the Holy Hill Of Christ's sublime ascent. Christian Ballads. PREFACE. THE editor of the following pages has aimed at nothing beyond a mere memorial of the Rev. Dr. Bayard. The task of preparing a biography worthy of the man, if called for by the Church, must devolve upon some one better qualified, and enjoying more leisure than he is enabled to command. He finds a pleasure, however, in indulging the hope, that his humble labors may be found useful, in some degree, in promoting so desirable an object, as that of securing to the Church a full and ably executed memoir, at some future period.
