Invisible his airy wings,

Thy handmaids weeping at the gate,

His long entrancing note!

As if they loved in vain!
That fearful moment when he left the cave

And yet so sweet the tears they shed,
Thy heart grew chill:

'Tis sorrow so unmix'd with dread,
He was thy hope-thy joy-thy love-thine all They scarce can bear the morn to break
And that last thought on him thou couldst not save That melancholy spell,
Sufficed to kill;

And longer yet would weep and wake,
Burst forth in one wild cry—and all was still.

He sings so wild and well !
Peace to thy broken heart, and virgin grave! But when the day-blush bursts from high
Ah! happy! but of life to lose the worst!
